Pumpkin Ale

You know I don't usually like fruit flavored beers or ales, but I'll have to admit that because pumpkin is such a muted flavor and it goes well with savory flavors it was well suited to be paired up and I liked it.

FWIW, do not buy Post Road pumpkin ale. That one was bad. Buffalo Bill's Brewery, Saranac, and Smuttynose were all much better.

How does sam adams Ocktoberfest compare to Pumpkin Ale? Is it similar in flavor? I may pick some up to try.

I got a 6 pack of that... it has no pumpkin anything in it. It's good though.

I've only tried the Blue Moon Pumpkin Ale and it was pretty good, but still lacking something.

How's the pumpkin ale from World Market?

There's a local bar here that makes their own pumpkin spice ale. OMG, I love it. I don't drink as much as I used to, but I'll be going to that bar once a week for a pint.

I dont' like pumpkin ales... IMO the idea sounds great, but the implementation never really works.

What do you suggest as a good seasonal ale? For the fall?

How about a marzen or octoberfest brew?

As winter gets on, I enjoy sampling and sharing barleywines.

Thx for the suggestions. Where do I buy?

You should ask around, but you're probably going to want to find a liquor store that carries a large selection of craft beers. Often a store that specializes in wine selections will also have a good beer selection. You won't find good beer at the gas station or at chain retailers (these will carry the biggies like Sam Adams, but not the regional breweries). A up-scale grocery may also have a surprising selection of beers.

I should. They actually coat the rim of the glass with a cinnamon/sugar powder, kinda like how they do the salt with margaritas.

Rocky Run

I love a lot of beer....But for some reaosn i am not a fan of pumpkin or other beers that add weird flavors. Dog Fish Head in delaware makes a suppsoedly good pumpkin ale...just dont like it as much as a good old IPA or somethig like it.

ah, just ate lunch next to the columbia one. GF lives by the charles village location, maybe i should swing by... though i doubt my loyalty to Brewer's Art or Thirsty Dog can be swayed.

I believe there's only one Rocky Run, which is the one you had lunch at. I love that place, and it's my favorite bar.

looks like there's 3 of them: http://www.rockyrun.com/locations.htm

...but you've gotta come downtown for real bars, man!

Wow, didn't know that.

I stopped drinking heavy about a year ago. Since then, I have a couple drinks a month, if that. This Fall, I'll probably have 1 pumpkin ale a week. The appeal of going out drinking has grown old to me, probably because I did it so much. But you're right, Fells Point and Federal Hill are plenty of fun.

Smuttynose & Post Road(Brookyln Brewery) are both near the top of the best rated pumpkin ales. I have both with me & they are indeed great. Things like temperature, food, the way it's served can change your opinion dramatically.

Saranac makes serveral decent brews, being a somewhat bigger brewery. I enjoy their black & tans. Bill's is decent, though people either like it or despise it.

Besides grabbing something truly homemade & local, Southampton & Dogfish also make some quality ale, though tastes vary. Some people enjoy more spice, while others are thrown overboard because of the cheap cloves alot of places use. Some just want a little bit, but a big helping of pumpkin. Throw in a little roasting, & serve with a big wedge of pie, it's amazing.
