Pumpkin Ale? Pale Ale? What is this stuff?

Sorry. I'm a college student and I'm just confused about what this stuff is. I know its illegal for me to drink and such but I'm a college student and I'm curious. I don't like beer anyway so I stick to my pepsi. Anyway, I know beer, and southern comfort, and the vodka/orange juice drinks and all that stuff. What I don't know is this Ale stuff. What is it? I see a lot of stuff called something Ale in the stores, particularly Pumpking ale. Seeing that got me really curious. What is it? Does it still taste like beer? Or is it made of pumpkins and stuff instead of hops and barley?
