google earth is the latest trend in my classes...

Yes, but I have done it in a discussion of ~20 people. I had a midterm in 1 hr, and so I pulled out my laptop, opened my math book, sat in the far corner and did my math review.....

Just don't give anyone eye contact. It's embarassing.

I want to use my laptop, but is it rude in small classes?

I did it in highschool (learning disability here guys, I wasn't trying to be obnoxious)

Make sure that you have long battery life, it always bugs people when there is a power cord going across the room.

Make sure you don't have a desktop replacement notebook, those beasts are loud and tend to annoy people.

Just maintain a fair amount of common sense and it wont annoy the people around you.
