Woot couldn't wait pulled the trigger on the XFX 4890 Extreme $290 out the door with a free 4 GB OCZ Flash Drive and the new HAWX PC game for free as well....I already sold my 4870 for $160 and some ram for $20 so it cost me about $120 to upgrade not bad...I'll be sticking my artic cooling twin turbo on this as well...I game at 1680x1050 and every review I saw showed that the 4890 was faster than the GTX275 at almost every game at that res. Can't wait to try it out...

Thanks can't wait also I was thinking about hooking up my new 4890 to my 37 inch 1080P LCD tv. I would use the HDMI input to play my games. Do games usually look and play ok on a setup like this?

Worthless upgrade you've done there. 120$ for around 8% performance is not worth it, no matter how you look at it. You will probably not see any difference in your games. I don't want to spoil your joy, but this is my take on your upgrade. Sorry. :(

No problem :) Remember though I also got a $40 free game that I wanted to buy and a free $20 flash drive for free so $60 worth of stuff I would have had to pay for I got for free which softens the blow a bit :)

yeah no kidding. it would be hard to justify paying $225 but $290 for that card is insane. such a small gain for that price after selling his card. Im looking hard at 4890 but I likely couldnt get enough for my gtx260 192sp to justify it.

Yes it softens the blow, but still...:) It would have been a nice move going from a 4850 or even a 4870 512mb, but I would never have done this if I had a 4870 1gb. You basically payed 100$ for an oc and of course some "stuff". It's more of an improvement instead of an upgrade, but an expensive one. From the enthusiast point of view, is totally acceptable though. ;)

You guys are forgetting the overclocking to be done with the 4890. If you OC it you get GTX 285 performance at a lower cost.

It's a solid upgrade in my view. You get a better card, along with the other things you've wanted (game & flash). Enjoy it. :)

yeah but the gtx285 is really overpriced. Im just saying paying all that money to go from a 4870 to 4890 seems a little silly at least to my cheapskate ass.

As I said in my post, with overclocking it's more like going from a 4870 to a GTX 285. There is a noticeable difference there.

That's really the main selling point of the 4890 IMHO, high OC potential (and less power usage than the slower 4870).

I was factoring in the OC on this card. From what I have seen it does indeed overclock fairly easy to GTX285 speeds for less plus the free game and flash drive...and if I use this on my 37 inch LCD that little extra power might come in handy...

I understood what you said thats why I mentioned the gtx285 being overpriced. my point is that in IMO even with the overclocking the 4890 and of course the gtx285 would not be worth that much money to upgrade from a 4870. now if I had a much slower card or was about to get a card then the $225 4890 cards are would I would look at because the more expensive ones arent really worth. some cards are overpriced so they can act like they give you something for free. anyway its no big deal.

I don't want to seem harsh, but that's one of the most unnecessary upgrades and expenditures I've seen. The HD 4870 1GB is already an excellent card and the HD 4890 isn't that much better at that rez with that CPU. If the O.P. could cancel the order it would be a wise move (even if you have money to burn or are a complete ATI nut).

That assumes you're not overclocking the GTX285 and with EVGA's voltage adjustment app which is 100% covered by warranty that opens up more possibilities.

Congrats on the HD4890 with the Third party cooling. I wish I had one of those @ 1000 Mhz for special games. (My PSU only has two 6 pin power connectors so that is the max GPU I could buy)

Very true, but the GTX 285 is around $100+ more.

4870----->4980? :confused:

Then again, I went 9800GTX---->GTX260----GTX280----280 SLI.

Meh.....enjoy!

And you probably will get $100 more performance if you do some on the edge overclocking

I feel the few extra dollars for the 4890 is worth it over the 4870
Any ideas

Yeah if I was on the market now I'd go with the 4890 b/c of the OC headroom rather than the 4870. Whether it's worth going from the 4870 to 4890?? I don't think it is and is why I decided not to get the 4890.

I upgraded to a 4890 from a 3870 and am quite happy with it. That said, with regards to the overclocking, the one I got from Powercolor can't even do 900 MHz. As such I just put it back to stock since fooling around with it for what is probably a 2-3% increase isn't worth it in my eyes.
