Good morning all, just upgraded from whats in my sig to a 940 BE and a 4890, will my AC 550RF cover it, it has plenty of PCI-e connections but im unsure of the power output it says its only got like 450 or so on the 12v rails? Also i do plan on upgrading to the 750w or 850w Professional series modular corsair PSU with the 7 year warranty when they are released in a few months i just want to make sure i will make it till then without blowing my 550RF to pieces. Also im going up to a 750 or 850 because i will be going crossfire in the near future after the PSU upgrade. Thanks!

Well you might be okay, but I'm not sure if that PSU would be a good one to have with your 4890. You have 408w on the combined 12v rails (34A), but I found a review here. The review was a mixed bag as far as results, so I'd be a bit cautious with pushing it. I haven't read any other reviews, so do some more research before taking the plunge. I'd really consider getting a Corsair 550vx or 650tx at the minimum. Maybe even the Antec 500w Earthwatts would be okay too. I know your waiting for the newer releases, but I'm just throwing a few options to consider.

Well according to that review the +12V rail had too low of a voltage when the power supply was supplying less than 300W of power, but more than that it passed the tests. If it has worked fine for him with his Athlon 7750 and HD4830 then I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work fine with his upgrades.

Just concerned that the added power consumption (drain) on the PSU might push it passed the PSU limits. Not that it will, but since it wasn't reviewed too well, I'd be a bit concerned.

yeah, i guess ill see how it goes, honestly i hate this PSU and reccomend no one else buy it, ever. The only reason i got it was because when i first built this box a few months ago i had just been laid off and money was tight, i got it on sale for $50 CAD. I just want to wait till the new corsairs are out so i hope its ok for a few months.

one more thing, do you think this PSU will hold back my OC ability? i plan to OC both the CPU and GPU as much as i possibly can. I guess i can just run it stock till i upgrade PSU. I wish corsair made something between 620 and 1000 that was modular, maybe ill just pull the pin now and grab the modular 1000W :)

Something else to consider is that figures for things like how much the cpu uses are when the cpu is maxed. You rarely will max out the cpu at 100%.

Reading that review though, 10.8VDC is really poor for a PSU. That is almost over 10% loss of regulation. Even a transformer with bridge and cap could do better.

When the voltage drops like that you are going to see large increases in current draw.

Normally to get 120 watts out of the supply at 12VDC you would need 10A, with 10.8VDC you need 11.1A. And it only gets worse as the load increase. 200watts, normally 16.7A , becomes 18.5A

i did decide to replace it, then i saw a review for the modular 750 and 850w corsairs and decided to wait till they are released as i would prefer to have the cables as neat as possible.

for anyone who is interested it works, been running new parts(updated rig in sig for full parts list) and this POS PSU runs it, i must admit i am surprised, even OC to 4Ghz it still handles it, it does whine a little though when gaming. but so far no crashes lockups or anything.

Figured it would work, just concerned for how long or if there will be issues later. You might not have any, but that was just a concern. How do you like the mobo?

mobo is geat, was cheap, good chipset, heatpipe heatsink for VRM's and northbridge, all solid caps. Good OC options, no complaints so far. Has no problem with my 940BE.

crashed once while gaming last night, and the whine it makes is getting louder, might have to pull pin on PSU upgrade sooner than i want to.

That is the first sign of too much for the PSU. Better either lower load or get a new PSU....

Got a Corsair 850tx, it was only 15$ more than the 750 so i figured what the hell why not. This is an AWESOME PSU incase anyone is wondering, no more whineing noise, its super quiet but im not stressing it much till i go crossfire. Cables are super long, all sheathed, lots of connectors, comes with zip ties for cable management and looks very high quality, im impressed.
