Pulled my hamstring (again)

Entity

Lifer
Well, the injury that started it all last year is back. Playing Ultimate on Friday, felt a small pop, and now my leg hurts when I lift it backwards (with knee bent) and occasionally when I bend my knee (and other random times). :|

Anyone have advice on exercises to do to strengthen the hammy in the future? I can't deal with having this injury popping up every year.

Oh, and yes, I've started my RICE routine for treatment, and I have compression shorts to use once I start playing again to keep the hamstring healthy.

I'm going to start a better stretching routine as soon as it's healthy to begin it again (most places say 3-5 days after injury).

I'd say just stretch it out more and maybe do some weightlifting if you have access to the appropriate machines (where you can lay on your stomach and lift by bending your knees).

I have always heard that having quads that are much stronger than hamstrings will result in many pulls and strains for the hamstring muscles.

decent information

That goes for all opposing muscles. If you're biceps are a lot bigger than your triceps you'll have more tricep pulls, and vica versa.

Great info -- I've read that page already. 😀

I'm headed in for a sports massage tomorrow morning at 9 to prevent scar tissue from building, and am planning on doing more hamstring exercises (in addition to stretches) to help me out as the season continues.

If your Biceps are bigger than your triceps then you have funny looking arms!

what he said. 🙂

stretch very well, light squats, legpress and the leg extension machines. the key is to just take it slow and easy, i used to have a lot of problems with my knees poping out of place after a snowmobiling accident, since i've started working my legs out regularly, there has been a huge improvement.

Does anyone know how long I should wait before soaking in the hot tub? I've heard that soaking too soon after injuring a muscle can cause problems.

I'm back to a semi-normal workout routine (can't do weights on the legs or sprints yet), thanks to compression shorts and a neoprene sleeve. I can't wait to get back on the ultimate field, though. Should hopefully be back by next Sunday (1.5 more weeks).

Pics of you in the compression shorts? 😉

Stiff legged deadlifts really hit the hams better than any excercise I've encountered - I've never really liked leg extensions.

I've heard those are great -- do you have any links showing proper form (with pics preferred)? I don't do much on weights overall, as I'm mainly a heavy cardio guy.

I'm also still not sure if I need to strengthen my hamstrings. My massage therapist said that one of my main concerns should be getting my hamstrings and hip flexors to be more flexible; she mentioned that those were probably causing some of my problems.

Take like a good yoga class once a week. I consider myself in pretty good shape, working out and such but I started taking yoga, and it stretches and works your muscles much differently than what sports or the gym does. Try it!
