I was switching out my heatsink on my winchester 3200 today. I had originally put a thermaltake silentboost on and today I received my XP90. Pulling on the heatsink required a hefty amount of force and I actually ended up pulling the cpu out with the heatsink (artic silver 5 is like epoxy!). Well, I'm typing right now from the machine so it still works but that was pretty terrifying. Anybody else ever pull an athlon 64 or any cpu for that matter with the ziff(?) lock in place?
 
Yeah, I did that same exact thing with an old S478 Celeron and a POS mobo (ECS board with a craptastic VIA P4X400 chipset). Needless to say, I was also pretty terrified. I figured out the problem that I had with it though, it was because the cheap thermal goo that the heatsink manufacturer (Vantec) included, after being on the CPU for a while, it turns to glue, much like what AS5 does, I guess.
 
hi...its no big deal i think...its happens when u apply too much TIM and if ur system works fine...i dont think theres any cause for worry.
 
Run the computer for a bit to heat up the thermal compund to make it easier to break the bond. Gently twist the HS back and forth until it loosens up. Then pull it off.

Nah... put foot on motherboard for support and pull straight up on heatsink with all your might. 😉
 
Just upgraded today with a retail 2800+ on a Chaintech VNF3-250 and this happened to me. I cleaned off the retail therman crap and applied some new paste. I thought I had pissed away $122 when it happened!

I've done that numerous times. People claim that only happens with Arctic Silver, but I've had it happen with a myriad of thermal compound. The last time it happened, I had one pin bend. I went to reseat my CPU, and I didn't notice the bent pin, I just GENTLY applied a tad bit of force, to reposition/align the cpu and bent a total of 18 pins. Now on a P4, with those small pins, let me tell you, it's NO EASY TASK! Took me about an hour of careful maneuvering to fix it.
 
The problem is when ppl do it and not pay attention and then either set the item down and bend the pins...This has happened many times as well...The good thing is usually none of the pins will bend due to this....

I recommend as mentioned...warm cpu...trun off...then unlock retention or screws and slighty twist in a clockwise then counter clockwise motion with no vertical uplift...this will help break the suction effect that happens...
