Pull-ups, Dips, Ab-workout stand

With all that tilting and rotating that the grips and legs do, I'd think it would compromise stability.

ah, thanks Amused.

dammit, why can't those be in the Outlet section so i can use a 20% off coupon 🙁

I agree. Plus, a gym membership can never be used as a clothes hanger.

Depends completely on the person, and what is available to them. I have to drive over 25 minutes each way to get to a decent gym that doesn't have equipment older than I am. And if I did drive there I'd have to take a number to get on the cardio machines I'd like to use. I use equipment in my own home far more often than I do driving 25 minutes away to use something that I have to wait in line to use.

Agreed. However, if there is a gym close to you with decent equipment, and you can get there at off peak hours, by all means use it. To outfit my home to be able to do everything as easily as I do in a gym would cost tens of thousands of dollars.

I would need:

A flat bench
An incline bench
A decline bench
a double weight stack
A rowing station
A T-bar
A machine fly station
A club quality eliptical trainer and treadmill
A standing calf machine
A seated calf machine
A squat station
A leg press
Dumbells ranging from 10 lbs to 110 lbs (150, actually, because I'm using the 110s on the bench now)
Pre-weighted curl bars ranging from 20 lbs to 120 lbs.
A preacher curl stand
Roman chair

Yes, I could buy a power cage and an adjustable bench and cover many of those items. But I said "as easily" and adjusting something between every set is not easy. 😛

also note that

1) those machines for sale aren't very tall

2) some of them can't even handle more than 180 lbs

just to keep in mind.....

I've got a bench that does incline/flat/decline/military bench that I paid $220 for. Lifetime warranty. I can get a leg extension for $80 for it that gives me leg extension and hamstring curls. I can also add a lat tower for it for around the same price to give me lat exercices, and some tricep pull downs as well as a preacher curl bar.

I bought a wrack and dumbell set w/ 5lbs-45lbs for $190. I can hit a garage sale and get a boatload of plates and a barbell for around $100. I can add a power rack w/ a smith machine and multiple cable workouts for another $500. We just bought a treadmill for $1400.

Sure that's some money, but my wife and I use that stuff 5-7 times a week a piece. It's much more convenient for us to just wake up, walk downstairs, work out for an hour, and then head to work/class than it is to drive 25 minutes out of the way to use 75% of the equipment.

We aren't lifting to work out every single individual muscle in our body, and we aren't doing it to get ripped. We simply are looking to add some weight bearing resistance workouts and cardio to our lifestyle. We never will be models for a fitness magazine, but we'll still be in better shape than 90% of the population for our age.

For me, taking 5 seconds to adjust my bench from flat to incline and the money I've invested in it is well worth the added convenience of having it near me. And the fact that my wife uses it all as well just makes it all that much easier to spend the money on it.

Yeah, but I'm lazy. It's a wonder I workout at all! 😀

I'm lazy too. I just hate driving more than the actual workout 🙂 And it's just a PITA to shovel out your driveway in the winter just to drive down to the gym. Or to climb in and out of your car when it's 20 below to run into the gym and then back out when you are done.

Heh, my lawn service plows my drive in the winter (I told you I was lazy!) 🙂

Anyway, I guess I favor the gym because I get good motivation from the other guys that workout there.
