I know there is push technology you can use in Symantec called Remote Install from their mmc snapin, but I am looking for something to tell the user computer to grab the client update as well as teh virus definitions.

Is there a way to do this?

BTW this is on a 03 Server R2 with Xp enviroment.

Send them an email with a link to the client install in the vphome share, then set the appropriate LiveUpdate options for that client in SSC?

I'm trying to keep the user out of this, I am assuming thats what you mean by sending them an email. BTW I haven't worked with symantec a whole lot so excuse the ignorance.

I would like liveupdate to pull this down silently. So I dug around a little more in teh snap in instead of googleing and in the snap in under A/V there is a virus definitions manager. I went to that and at the bottom there is a box that you can check that says "Download Product updates using LiveUpdate". I assuming thats the one I want to use to pull down the new 10.1.x client to the users.

I'm going to do some more research and testing but will there be any user interaction required or will it instlall just like a virus def update?

looks like I found what I was looking for in the Symantec help files....

1. In the Symantec System Center console, right-click a server or server group, and then click All Tasks > Symantec AntiVirus > Virus Definition Manager.

2. In the Virus Definition Manager dialog box, do one of the following:

Uncheck Download Product Updates Using LiveUpdate to prevent application updates.

Ok, I gotcha. You just want them to update from Symantec instead of from your local AV server. I thought you wanted to install the client as well. The steps you listed are what you need then! I'm also fuzzy on Symantec. We've dumped it at all of our clients for Trend, much easier to manage, IMO.

The updates are still being pulled from symantec's server to our A/V server. You are correct, I want to pull the client down as well. That box is already unchecked and as soon as I set up a test group I am going to check it and see how it pulls the update then.
