Publishing Videos on web: how much am I looking at?

I'm thinking of publishing some very cool videos (not porno ;) ) on the web. I already have a 9 gig 10K rpm scsi, so that's taken care of. Since I only want this for the WWW, I think the files arent' going to be huge, and 9 gig should be enough.

What other hardware do I need, and how much money am I looking at to get this to work?? Doesn't have to be top quality, just presentable, decent. :)

Thanks.

(I hang out a lot on OT, I feel more comfortable posting this here.) :)

are you intersted in running streaming video? cause if you are, there was a thread about 1-2 weeks ago where someone was testing their real audio server, ask russ (he was having probs connecting thats why that detail stuck in my mind) i think adul was also part of it.

sorry not much help here.

I think the most costly thing "IF" your video gets alot of hits is the bandwidth. Who will be hosting it? You would need a t3 at least.

Defintely not streaming, and I'll take care the bandwith issue later..

Purely in terms of hardware to get the video in a computer.. what do I need?

What kind of format is the video currently in?

What quality of video are you looking at, also?

9 gigs won't get you far on quality video.:)

64bitloopy: no I don't need quality video. Just the format that's normally used for downloaded videos on the web.

I don't have a video capture device, and I know I'm going to need one for this project.

Encode with divx if you can you'll get a very sweet quality to space ratio. Also look into some of the capture cards made by Alladin, they put out some nice stuff, and since not only do they have a consumer line of equipment but a line of professional as well that would be used in a real production studio I think its safe to say they know their stuff :)

If your looking at just realvideo quality you won't need that much if you have real video producer. The quality sux but, hey....
For avi or mov it would take a little more.
mp4 is cool, the compression is good, but is it reliable yet?

Are you looking at combo capture/video cards?

Soybomb,
I'm more leaning towards affordable, consumer stuff. As long as the output is presentable. Again, don't need quality stuff.. this is for the web, they don't need quality stuff. ;)

I'm looking more toward a separate capture card. BTW, I'm always curious about this: The Intel Web cam Pro has a video in. Does this mean I can do video capturing on it? If yes, how's the quality on that thing?

You might want to go to www.pointlessaudio.com and email Kevin and ask him what he uses, hes like 17 or so I guess and has posted quite a bit of video work in the past so I imagine he has some recommendations for you based on his experience as well.

I'm sorry on that name too, Alladin was the name of the piece of hardware we used in the studio, Pinnacle is the actual company! Go HERE and look at some of their home products!

edit: I've used THIS for some of my own stuff and found it to be pretty nice and the price isn't bad either :)

Just be sure to stay away from any proprietery capture format. You might want to grow in the future and you want to be able to expand.

If cost is not an issue, a very affordable solution is available from matrox. they lowered the price to under 1000 for real time nle and fx.

soybomb:
that dc10plus looks nice.

<< Studio DC 10plus is Pinnacle's new consumer video editing system that allows a user to capture MJPEG video and audio, edit it, and then either create a new MJPEG for internet pages, or CD-ROM's, or output to video tape on a VCR or other video record deck. >>

An output to CDROM would be great. But, is MJPEG a propriatery format? Never heard of it before.

Hmmmm actually I'm not sure what it dumped the video out as, I thought in the end I always wound up with mpgs, but this was about 2-3 years ago so it might not hurt to email them and ask :)
