I have a Compaq cq61-420 and it was working fine until recently. Now, when i try to connect to any wifi, it will connect to the router, but gives me the "no access" yellow triangle, and this is connecting to unsecured routers. I have restarted, reinstalled the drivers for the wifi adapter, and not sure where to go next. any help would be much appreciated.

What the IP number when it connected is?

If it 169.xxx.xxx.xxx then you are not connected.

I am not in front of it right now, unfortunately. I will check when I get home. It just struck me as odd, since it worked fine, and was able to connect to my wifi, as well as two others in the vicinity. But now, it seems to not want to give me anything. Even somewhere like Borders or such with an usecured open connection. It will find the signal fine, and give me full bars, but I get the 'no access' little yellow triangle no matter what. I have stopped and restarted the adapter, and have reinstalled the drivers, all to no avail. I am running Windows 7 if that may be an indicator of any particular problems.

You need to use Public type of Network.

Take look at the Network Center setting and make sure that it is configured correctly.

Aha.. did not even think of that. The last time I dug in the innards of a pc, wifi did not exist. I will check that first thing when I get home. I assumed it was some simple thing, since it is a brand new laptop, and stopped working randomly.

So, since everything I do is stored on an external drive, i just went and did a reformat, which, surprisingly, only took like 7 minutes. When I got it back up, it did not connect, so i went to office depot to get a new usb wifi (lost the old one and did not feel like waiting for one to be shipped) and of course, while in o.d., I checked their wifi, and I was able to hope right on. So, went back home, and Borders pulled up fine. I am going to give it a week or so, and see if the problem replicates itself, and if so, then I will see about getting it fixed (it is under an extended warranty.) thanks for the assitance, and if it acts a fool again, I will post another message.
