public wifi access problem.

Okay, I'm traveling and having a few problems using my macbook to access some of those free public wifi spots.

I can access some of the free ones but the one at my hotel and one at starbucks I cannot.

I'm in Europe so Starbucks here uses btopenzone. Access is free and doesn't require a password but when I was helping someone else access the wifi with her macbook, it looks like you are directed to a landing page where you have to click on a button and then proceed.

On my computer, I never get to the landing page. I receive timeout errors from within safari and chrome.

For the hotel: it is free but apparently requires a password (not for acessing the actual wifi signal...that is totally open), which I assume means you'll be directed to a landing page when you first bring up a browser...Again, all I get is page timeout errors.

I have checked all my network settings a million times and cannot figure out why I cannot connect to these services.

What really frustates me is the lady in starbucks with her macbook. I was able to show her how to do it and she connected right away with the same computer?

Help please!!

check your DNS settings, make sure you are getting them automatically. if you've set it up for opendns or google dns, it could cause this problem

Ah, i had a static 208. something address in there. Removed that and now it works at starbucks but not the hotel....hmm
