Public Techie gripe...

Just sitting here waiting for a file copy operation to complete, so nothing else to do. Nobody to talk to so I'm going to gripe here. I don't care if you don't want to hear it... You don't have to click on the thread anyways, if you don't like it.

7 year old server (CPQ Proliant) going to be retired 6 months ago.
Department manager wants to re-deploy server for his department's purposes.
His team sets it up and puts some high-profile accounts / their files on it.
His team does not back it up.

I get a call today for some support on it (I am Tier 2 server support). I trek over and find it has dead motherboard. No POST, no nothing. Get it to work by replacing with spare board. However, doesn't see disk arrays properly, and won't boot an OS. Learn I can't mess with the array config since no backups have been done.

Bottom line, finally able to see array using BartPE (I sing praises to your name, Bart...) I am currently copying things off to another server, then I'm going to kill this thing once and for all.

I've been at this 8 hours now.

That's all I have to say now. Similar experiences? Please do share.

Yes:

"saving money" by re-using broken down equipment in a business setting can be a stupid thing to do.

Not having a backup strategy for a server in a business setting is a really, really stupid thing to do.
