Don't be a putz like me and get a flat, go to replace it, and then find out that your spare is flat too!

DOH!

I bought my car used, never thought to check the spare tire. Turns out, the spare must have been used at one point or another, got punctured, and then they tried patching it. Must not have been a good plug because it was flat as could be. Ended up having to buy two new tires today :frown:

I'm seriously thinking about nabbing a two of those portable air compressors to put in the cars. I ended up pulling over in a neighborhood to change the tire and luckily somebody on the street I was on had an air compressor to fill up the spare. It was leaking, but it lasted long enough to get me over to Sam's Club for a replacement.

we sell them frequently at work for $9(canadian tire) and they do the trick. plus having it in the trunk gives me no excuse not to check my pressure every week, which leads itself to better tread wear :)

I had gotten my old Toyota Avalon used. About a month after driving it off the lot, I got a flat tire. I go to change the tire and discover that I have wheel locks and no key (naturally I didn't find out until I had gotten the jack and spare tire out, thank god I didn't actually jack the car up). I ended up getting a can of that fix-a-flat stuff and then driving it to the dealership to get repaired. I got a key the same day.

Or go to Target and buy a little portable inflater for $8 like I did...plugs into the cig lighter. It's come in handy twice now.

My spare is flat. It's always flat. In fact, it's supposed to be flat. Porsche uses this really cool collapsible spare tire that stores deflated, and they have an air pump that comes with the car (though I did have to fix my pump since the plug had shorted out). Porsches also come with a bag of plastic gloves for changing the tire (so your hands don't get dirty) and a large bag to hold the damaged tire so that your trunk doesn't get dirty. I'm telling you, they thought of everything. :)

i also keep a hatchet, survival kit, swiss army knife, ka-bar, shovel, coolant, motor oil, ps fluid, tranny fluid, flares and a 12V trouble light in my trunk(doesn't take up much room, if you've ever seen the trunk of a crown vic you'd know what i mean ;)) so i'm ready for just about anything. most of my driving is rural so you never know what you'll run into(literally) which is why i am getting a set of push bars this summer

IMHO, you would be better off buying a 5lb CO2 canister and using that to fill up your tires. Its unbelieveably faster than those 12v compressors and is relatively small.

ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzziinggggggggggggggggg! I'll bet that one hurt...:p

I have a full size spare. 33 x 10.5. :D

However, I also have a 12v compressor as well. It's small (about the size of a six pack...maybe a little bigger) and works well. Slow as hell, but infinitely better than nothing.

I air down the tires when off-roading, so I use the compressor to air up before getting back on pavement.
