My son will start first grade next year, and I am debating on sending him to a private school. I dont want him to get into the kind of trouble I did in school (drinking, drugs and all around bad things). Do you think that I would be better off sending him to private school?

Nope, I dont think it would matter, as long as your a good parent, and know what your child is doing and learning. If your a good parent it wont matter if your child goes to private or public school.

I went to public then a private school in 8th grade. I wish I would have gone there from kindergarden on up like the "lifers" did - I was way behind when I joined them.

Most of the "lifers" ended up at an Ivy League school.

It doesn't matter because both are exactly the same when everything boils down...

I've attended both and had my son go to both. Not much difference in the availability or use of drugs. I will say that with a private school you have better communication and more parent involvement. As a parent, I found I was able to work with the teachers/administration more over any concerns that came up.

Best of Luck!

Public school is horrible. Did the same damn thing for 4 years (4th-7th grade). I learned nothing those years in school. Lucky for me I had a library card.

If you got into it, your kid will get into it.

Regardless of the school, if your kid wants to get into it, he will.

Private school will just make him/her a pussy that does drugs.

that was probably the most brilliant post I have ever read in my entire life, could you compile all of your posts into a word file for me? I have a feeling that my life would be so much better if only you would share your great knowledge with me.

The closest private school around me is a catholic institution. Here's the drug breakdown in my school:

Alcohol - Ridiculous Amount
Weed - A lot of it
E - Not a lot of it
Heroin - Nill/Non-existent
Coke/Cocaine - A lil bit
Misc. Drugs - Nill/Non-existent

In the private school:
Alochol - A lot of it
Weed - Not too much of it
E - Decent Amount
Heroin - Not a lot of it
Coke/Cocaine - Decent Amount
Misc. Drugs - Decent Amount

Thats going on my friends account and about 10 of his friends. It's alot easier to get the higher-end drugs in a private school because a lot more people have the cash for it. This is only my public HS vs. The Nearest Catholic Private School, so take it with a grain of salt.

It all boils down to parenting though.

I guess it does huh? I grew up without a dad so that might explain a fair amount of the trouble I got into

I'd say private would be more important for grades 7-12 as long as you do a very good job of making sure they learn the basics in 1-6. What it really boils down to is it being a good quality school (good teachers mainly). Some public schools are great, some private are terrible, you need to do research on your specific schools.

Okay,

This is coming out of someone that just got out of high school last month, graduated May 15th. I've been in public schools all of my life. From Kindergarten to my Senior year here in lovely Palm Bay, Florida. I was always in the Honors/GSP program so I guess I was "special." What I saw it's really what your kids attitude to school is. If your kid has a interest in suceeding, the school system I was in allowed that a lot and they really liked you. If you could care less and just wanted to cause trouble, you get kicked out. There's this "zero tolerance" policy here in Brevard County. It means they don't take any bullsh1t basically. If you get caught fighting on school you will get arrested and expelled. That's it.

Now before I went to High School, my grandparents wanted me to go the local catholic high school here. I took the entrance exam, took orientation but I didn't like it. They had sh!t compared to my public high school, my public high school offers 3x more AP classes and is so much more technologically advanced then the private school. Plus my parents had to pay 5k a year compared to being free and I get a better education.

I loved every single high school year. I saw a lot of kids drop low as you can go and just drop out of school or get kicked out. Just teach your kid right from wrong and make sure you are always there for your kid. A lot of good kids just get stuck in the wrong crowds at the wrong place and the wrong time.

Oh, about the drug and alcohol thing, here's my breakdown:
Alcohol: Some parties, but most of the kids at my school are smart and just crash at the house.
Weed: Some, but those are the losers.
X: Haven't even heard of it on campus.
Coke: None.
Heroin: None.

I guess it all depends on your area.
