Okay,
This is coming out of someone that just got out of high school last month, graduated May 15th. I've been in public schools all of my life. From Kindergarten to my Senior year here in lovely Palm Bay, Florida. I was always in the Honors/GSP program so I guess I was "special." What I saw it's really what your kids attitude to school is. If your kid has a interest in suceeding, the school system I was in allowed that a lot and they really liked you. If you could care less and just wanted to cause trouble, you get kicked out. There's this "zero tolerance" policy here in Brevard County. It means they don't take any bullsh1t basically. If you get caught fighting on school you will get arrested and expelled. That's it.
Now before I went to High School, my grandparents wanted me to go the local catholic high school here. I took the entrance exam, took orientation but I didn't like it. They had sh!t compared to my public high school, my public high school offers 3x more AP classes and is so much more technologically advanced then the private school. Plus my parents had to pay 5k a year compared to being free and I get a better education.
I loved every single high school year. I saw a lot of kids drop low as you can go and just drop out of school or get kicked out. Just teach your kid right from wrong and make sure you are always there for your kid. A lot of good kids just get stuck in the wrong crowds at the wrong place and the wrong time.
Oh, about the drug and alcohol thing, here's my breakdown:
Alcohol: Some parties, but most of the kids at my school are smart and just crash at the house.
Weed: Some, but those are the losers.
X: Haven't even heard of it on campus.
Coke: None.
Heroin: None.
I guess it all depends on your area.
