I live in a suburban town and if you drive off to the west, you starting driving along a vast grid of country roads with grassy (seemingly empty) fields in all directions.

I'm just wondering, is there any chance of there being some land out there that isn't owned by anybody?
I wanted to have a bonfire out there so I called the FD to find out about regulations and the guy said first of all I'll need to get permission from the property owner.

How can I tell what's public land and what isn't?/Any ideas on where to burn a big bonfire?

everything is owned by somebody
"public land" is owned by some govt. either federal/state/local and you can't just start a fire on it

your best bet is to find a farmer/some one with a big spread and ask them for permission for this

well, I've talked to the city gov and they're ok with recreational fires nearly anywhere on their property, so probably if I can locate some open city property it will be ok

You're looking for city property outside of the city...

Think about that for a while.

Chances are that the area in question is not technically within the city limits and has its own set of rules anyway.
