ok
you are in a public bathroom stall. (must be stall, standard toilet)
the toilet is not a fancy-pants auto-flusher but rather the standard pull handle located behind and above the toilet.
when it is time to flush, do you use your hand to push the lever or your foot?
also: are you male or female.

i am reading a book that brings this up and suggests that there is a huge difference between what men and women do in this situation.

any answers not addressed in the poll, could you please post them?

(let us assume the the bathroom is in decent, typical, respectable public bathroom condition. not too filthy, not as comfy as, say, your house bathroom)

I know it's paranoid, and that bathrooms are not the germ factories we think they are... but it's just the thought of it.

Female/foot. Two things have touched the handle: hands that have just been used to wipe someone else's butt, or someone else's filthy shoe (that's been stepping on the dirty bathroom floor.) Intellectually, I know that I'm just about to wash my hands with soap, and that the door handles and shopping cart handles and even the cash in my pocket is just as likely to be just as nasty, but still... ewwww.

This brings up a good point: I always use my hand to flush at home. I don't want ANYONE kicking my toilet handles. Home toilets aren't made for that kind of abuse.

Female and I try not to touch ANYTHING in public restrooms even though I scrub my hands! I have my own little system...the only catch is opening the door to get out if they have one! :p

Alot of the time, its a bar bathroom, and the ground is nasty. Plus i have been drinking. So there isn't
a chance in hell I'm lifting a leg and chance losing my balance and fall down. Especially when I'm going
to wash my hands anyway. Now if it looks like someone has pissed all over the handle, than I'll be honest,
that toliet isn't getting flushed.

The trick is to use your elbow to get paper towels after you wash your hands. Then you use the towels to turn off the water and open the door before throwing it away. I don't always go to that extreme.

I try not to touch anything in public bathrooms other than turning on/off the water to wash my hands.

What about the option for not flushing? My experience tells me that it's not uncommon for people to walk off without even touching the handle. Male, hand, btw.

Same here. My favorite facilities are in the very modern bathrooms where the toilet will flush automatically, the sink sensors turn on the water when you wash your hands and a sensor triggers paper towels when your hands are underneath. Your only obstacle is opening the door. ;)
