Have every team give their phones to another team. This way they can't use their phones, but if someone is trying to reach them then the team with their phone can still give it back to them to answer any calls/texts.

BTW, smart watch cheaters wouldn't necessarily have to type in any search on their watch (which would be somewhat easy to detect if someone is fiddling on their watch too much). I suspect they have an accomplice send texts which can be read on the watch. Unfortunately, the way it's set up, the bar has people who are not playing trivia and there's not much we can do to regulate them.

I was thinking that too, but
1) way too much of a hassle to monitor all traffic for possible searches
2) Way to much SSL use nowadays. I noticed my default Google searches are SSL now

1. Planted questions. Pull something from an Onion article or something like that. "Which supreme court justice is famously quoted as saying 'I am the law'?"

2. If you are setting up the questions right, the winning team should be at about 85% correct. There should be one or two questions that no one gets right. If the team of english majors gets the mass of the W boson to 3 decimal points, you know something is up.

3. Cheaters caught are given a lifetime ban

Problem is that most bar trivia games are really intended to make more money for the bar. Speedier games would likely lead to more folks leaving early. Here they basically play a song in between each question or section of questions and that seems to be pretty standard around the different bars in town.

The only way i could really imagine you stopping cheaters would be to make them check their phones at the door. I doubt you'll want to/be able to do that, though.

I'd make a rule that all teams must open a tab. And then all tabs will be tripled if the team is caught cheating.

That, and get voluntary monitors and put them in random groups.

If you care about Pub Trivia cheaters you aren't drinking enough and should be at a Trivia hosted by Barnes and Noble.
