I was just taking a look at definitions of some terms, when i stumbled upon the following. The term "objective" means "perceptible to the external senses." What exactly are the external senses? And why can't sympathy be perceived by them, but empathy can? Furthermore, why is empathy critical, but not sympathy? Thanks.

What psych course are you taking?

And wtf are these questions? Is that from Abnormal psych?

is this your homework?

can you observe empathy? I dunno... I guess so, but you would need to define your construct of empathy, then you need to operationalize it... (what observable events signal that someone is empathizing?)...

Of course you have to do these things with sympathy too.

critical objective emotions suck.

IIRC, empathy is an emotion that only exists if it's displayed, while sympathy is a feeling that doesn't necessarily have to be displayed.

Is that right? Crap, it's been a LONG time... heh

I can explain empathy and sympathy but this whole business about being "Critical" is foreign to me.

External senses are your basic ones - sight, touch, etc.

You know what, i need to learn how to read. It said that sympathy is usually nonobjective. Alright, now that we have that out of the way, what do they mean by critical and noncritical?
