Psychoanalysis time - Why does Fox say "Most powerful name in news"

Is it because they believe, rightly or wrongly that their audience likes the idea of power? That tagline always struck me as a little odd

Fox is commanding the airwaves, the Sheeple are well brainwashed.

That's pretty powerful stuff.

Same reason every automaker markets their trucks as "tough" and "powerful". It's a rather strange phrasing in that case as well, other words would better convey the types of traits you would want a truck to have. But adjectives that stress appealing HUMAN traits are better marketing, because they suggest that people who use that particular product have those traits as well. It's actually rather clever, especially given the intended audience.

Unique I suppose, since if you recorded the others and played them back they all sound
the same.

I think the people that watch Fox definitely are drawn to the idea of strength. I'm sure that that tagline went through focus groups and marketing guys before it made it into the screening room so a lot a thought probably went into it. Of course it's a silly tagline since this is a tv channel we're talking about where veracity and swiftness should be what matters. What does exactly is a "strong" tv channel anyway?

You know the ironic part.....is that that tagline is true. ;) (Just not in the context that they would intend it)

it's because their previous tagline was too definitive to be able to provide an excuse for it being an outright lie. so they thought this one up because it is especially vague and meaningless yet "powerfully" suggestive; just like the current administration fox represents. ;)

the present war-time climate of fear that we live in was created by the neocons because this is the climate they profit from the most.

in these times, fox, in close cooperation with the neocon agenda, provides for those that buy into bush's "war on terror" all the panacea they could ever hope to hear - "the war on terror is going well", "osama is on the run", "the economy is booming", "iran is evil", "gas prices are stable" and every other vague and empty but reassuring sound bites that they can cook up that draws viewers and not coincidentally advances the neocon agenda.

bush creates the fear that fox placates with favorable patriotic sounding neocon propaganda. it's a tidy, neat little symbiotic arrangement they have there.

These questions can always be answered by Moonbeam's law. You feel worthless and insignificant and gravitate to anything that can compensate and mask that feeling. Everything can be understood by the simple fact that we do not know we hate ourselves, but do. Everything we do is to pretend differently. This is why we can be manipulated. We are not centered in self love, we are nothing real. Sorry, I wish it were otherwise, but I know you can't hear this or take it in, which means, of course, that you are truth safe anyway. You will now go back to sleep.

That makes no sense...the power of a network's news coverage has nothing to do with their number of viewers. A network with 5% and that same network with 50% of viewers is not suddenly a better network, it's simply the same quality network with more people watching it.

Of course what DOES change is their influence. Perhaps the tagline isn't really for the viewers at all...but for the politicians who want to influence what people think about world events. :)

I really like the obsession some people have with numbers though, especially in this country. If our various industries are any indication, being the most popular of something almost seems like an insult. If Americans were any judge of quality, reality shows would have been off the air years ago... ;)

Despite a clear evidence to the contrary, Faux viewers still believe we found WMD in Iraq and that Saddam was involved in 9/11.

When it comes to misinforming the public . . . Fox is pretty powerful.

Why is it that when a million companies have obvious advertising motives, no one cares. But when Fox News does it people feel special that they noticed it. The PR people for Fox News are no different if not the same PR people for CNN, MSNBC, etc.

Seriously, people in this country have to blame something. Waaah, Fox News is why people are doing this/believe this. Waaah, the world is the way it is today because of George Bush.

I think the real problem is the fact that you can record something on TV, and then forget to fastfoward through the commercials because your so used to seeing them.

Alas, apathy.

Nobody is claiming that other news organizations are in the business out of civic duty, or that they have no advertising motives, or even that they are totally and perfectly unbiased. But there is an important difference between how other news organizations are marketed and how Fox News is marketed. Fox is, as far as I know, the only major TV news organization marketed specifically towards a particular political segment. This isn't totally obvious of course, but I suspect a survey of TV viewers would reveal a HUGE right-wing leaning among Fox News viewers. Certainly my own experience supports this. While some Republicans bitch about the "liberal bias" in the media, I've found the people I know who watch CNN and the like to be fairly well balanced...and I have yet to meet a single Democrat or liberal who takes Fox News seriously. Not a single one.

Corporate bias is bad enough, and it's certainly a problem with almost every news organization out there. But what's worse is news organizations that are aimed specifically at attracting supporters of a particular political viewpoint...if only because they are having a disturbing amount of success doing so.

At least Fox News makes it obvious. But if you think it's just Fox News, think again.

I think the problem is that people concentrate on the editorial cable news segments too much. News is news, if you wan't to know who wins American Idol or how much a movie grosed, any channel will tell you the same thing.

Don't forget as well that FNC doggedly follows the stories that no one else cares about or has long forgotten about:

  • The latest rumors on lost blonde girl Natalee Holloway.
  • What kind of crazy sh!t has radical prof Ward Churchill said now?
  • Words of "wisdom" from Minuteman founder Tim Donnelly and updates on his crusade to secure the borders!
  • The UN oil-for-food corrpuption scandal.
  • Why John Gibson is merely misunderstood (and definitely not that bastard senator from the X-Men movies)!

And other oldies but goodies!

Man, people who hate Fox News sure love to watch it. If you guys hate it, stop watching it. It will give you less to complain about...

...yeah...I'm making friends.
