Psychiatrist have a sweet racket

With Psychologists (therapists, no drugs), they at least have to spend an hr with you to talk about your problems.

With a Psychiatrist (drugs, no therapy), they spend 15 min you and ask you if the drugs they presribed is working. If not, they change the dose and/or medication and tell you to come back in 2 weeks.

Insurance pays ~$100 each patient.

$400/hr just to write drugs and ask is it working. They refer people to psychologists if the patient needs therapy.

(Most psychaitrists don't do therapy because insurance don't pay $400/hr per patient)

Ok, I really got into the wrong line of work... $15/hr << $400/hr (yes, I know they don't see all of that).

Well, with doctors there's a chance of malpracticute lawsuit - hence the hefty prices. Don't know if you can have malpractice with psychiatrists.

A psychiatrist is an MD, so probably. Also, I'm assuming that out of that $100 comes the pay for the secondary workers (janitors, nurses, support staff, etc) as well as the overhead costs like the building, utilities, etc.. So, his take home is probably substantially less than $400/hour, though it is still a crazy high amount I'm sure. 🙂

psychiatrists make a boat load of cash. i think they end up making more money than physicians because they can see more patients per hour than physicians

regular doctors may have patients with varying problems thus much higher change that the doc will be spending more than 15 with him.

a phychiatrist usually just ask is the drug working and write drugs for a higher dosage or differnt type of drug if it isnt. everything else they refer you to someone else.

Do you have any idea of the amount of phone calls psychitrists receive from their patients and from other treatment providers concerning those patients? Do you have any sort of clue as to the nature of the issues and problems those patients bring to the Doctor or the tremendous level of legal responsibility Psychiatrist's carry for their patient's welfare? How about the burden of bearing witness ,of actively listening to another human struggling in horrible emotional pain?

You prescribe medications for someone who's liable to call you up at 2am and announce that he/she is going to kill themselves and tell me if you feel you're overpaid.Yeah,there are some crummy doctors around but there are also many,many good Psychiatrist's who don't get paid enough for all the suffering they bear witness to and treat.

Also, I doubt that all but the most successful psychiatrists have patients come non stop. They probably end up seeing only 5-10 patients a day
