Is there a reason they were using signed to begin with?

I don't get this either, same deal with unix time stamp, why is it a signed int, it should be unsigned! It should also be 64 bit and start at year 0.

It's not that easy. My company just spent 6 man-months converting one of our ids from integer to long.

We had to change thousands of lines of code in many tens of projects. All those projects had to be tested and deployed. Some of the projects hadn't been touched in a long time, so we had to figure out how to change, test, and deploy them.
