Psuedo-Rant: White... So White

First off, I know that this is not really a "serious problem," but I felt like ranting about it anyway.

I've been spending most of the summer repainting the inside of my house. When my family was first discussing the project, I had hopes that we could paint the house something other than boring white. But my mother had othe ideas. She insisted on making everything white. Plain boring white. Unfortunately, I don't have much leverage since I'll be gone in a year, but the house just looks so boring. I managed get them to allow me to paint my room a deep blue-grey (it actually looks really good) and to convince my little sis to make hers a lavender color, but even then my mother was commenting that the color "was just too dark" (even though, in the end, it had plenty of light even by her standards).

You might be asking, who cares? It's just color. But it's gotten kinda bad. You approach my white house, look at the cars in the garage, and see that are white. You walk up the stairs and see that all the walls around you are white. You walk into the kitchen, where you see the white walls, the white frige, the white oven, the white dishwasher, and the white linoleum floor. In fact, every room except for those of my sister (only because I coaxed her into it) and my self are white. Even one of my relatives, when she heard that we were painting the house, asked, "you're not painting it white again, are you?"

Thank you for listening to my (largely pointless) rant.

White is safe. If you don't know what you're doing, those colors can be pretty gaudy. Only colors I'll agree to are VERY light pastels... nearly white. I'm not in the mood to have this place look like a circus. Besides, light walls make rooms look bigger, and certainly brighter. I'd err on the safe side with your mom. Serves you right if she makes you paint your room back to white before you leave home.

Like I said, it's not that big of a deal, and no that's not all I can think about.

Well, just be sure to paint your home whatever colors you want when the time comes!!!! That's part of the fun of having to pay rent or having a mortgage. You should be able to paint the interior of wherever you live however you want.

I'm a color slut. Ralph Lauren has some wonderful paint colors, and I've got a light tan called Papyrus, a soft almost nude color called Biscuit, a delightful sunny yellow called Castle Path, and a light, white washed blue called Rain in my house. All the trim is a white called Picket Fence.

I let my daughter paint her own room the way she wanted and it's an oriental theme... she's got warm tan walls with poppy red trim. :D

Maybe you should get your mom to watch Trading Spaces?

I agree, white is boring. I painted every room in my house a different color, varying from light lilac to a deep blue in my bedroom... it does wonders for the soul to have a nice, relaxing, colorful house! Just wait until you get your own house - in the meantime, try not to fall asleep. ;)

My sis and her can't stop watching it, but that didn't change her view on what she wanted.

And as my father said, "We are a democratic family: I get five votes, the kids get 1 each, and she gets 20."

I can't wait till I get a house! Every single room is going to be a different color, shape, size, temperature, smell, and sound.

Of course, that statement above just about sets me up for a wife who just wants white.

LOL

Everything is white....

Then you add some plants...

And an oriental rug...

Put some colorful paintings on the wall....

Voila! It's home

Benjamin Moore's color viewer allows you to "paint a room" online. They have a gazillion colors to choose from, but here's a list of their Ready-Mixed Interior colors:
  • Atrium White
  • Antique White
  • Cameo White
  • China White
  • Navajo White
  • Linen White
  • White Dove
  • Bone White
  • White
  • Black
  • Decorator's White
  • Super White
That's all of them. See a pattern? :p

Did your mom use stark white, or more of an off white? I LOVE that Atrium White in flat paint on the walls, with semi gloss white trim. I'd be happy to do the whole house that way! BTW, you have anything against flat, super bright white on the ceilings?

It was an off white, and no, I don't really mind white on the ceilings, if you do something with the wall.

I've been spending most of the summer repainting the inside of my house.

Damn your slow:)

Next time. Move everthing away from the walls. Buy plastic sheeting and tape. Cover everything you don't want painted. Rent an industrial spayer for four hours and paint the whole house.

Most of my can probably be attributed to the way my dad wanted to do things. Instead of moving thigs away from the wall, we've been taking them out of the room, and he was lothe to using a sprayer.

Also, we haven't been working on it every day, as we've had a couple short vacations.

One last question before I go paint the exterior of my house... off white! Sail Cloth to be exact. Try it yourself.

Anyway, my question is, are your parents of different ethnic heritage? I think that has a LOT to do with preferences about decor.

Oh well, I'm off to wash and scrape and putty and sand and prime and paint and paint and paint... ugh!
