PSU with 650w too much for a low end build?

Hi,

I have initially planned to build myself a new build with the Ryzen 5 2600 as the base. I have also purchased some 16gb RAM and bought the highly reviewed EVGA Supernova 650 G2 Gold Modular PSU.

However, my plans have changed and I am now looking to build a build for my dad to be used for Youtube and Internet browsing. I have selected the Ryzen 3 2200G as the CPU. Since the computer will not be used for gaming and will not require much power, a 650w PSU is way too much.

I was able to return the RAM and sell my Ryzen 5 2600 CPU online. However, I am not able to sell the EVGA 650 G2 PSU. Unfortunately I opened the box to test if it was functioning and I am not able to return it. It cost me close to $100.

Should I keep the 650w PSU for a build that would only require 400W at best?
Should I just sell the PSU at a loss on Kijiji ($60?) and with the money get myself a Seasonic or EVGA 450W PSU that would better suit my needs?

If you're going to lose money selling it, you might as well keep it. It will be a little inefficient at lower loads, but it won't really make that much of a difference (certainly not how much you lose by selling and re-buying another unit).

I think it's fine for the job. It's an 80+ Gold so it will still be efficient even at half load. It has a 7 year warranty, so you won't have to worry about it for many years.
Should you decide to upgrade the computer in a couple years, you still have headroom with the power supply.

Well, I think that the issue of "Buying too much PSU" is waaay overblown. So what if the efficiency on your shiny new 80Plus Gold tanks to 70% at low loads. Still, in terms of actual absolute costs, it's going to be fractions of pennies more expensive. Big freaking whoop.

Too many people focus on certain specs, and meeting them, rather than looking at the bigger picture.

IOW, it should be fine, keep it, use it, and enjoy it.

Absolutely not, keep the current PSU, even with the much lower load it will still offer over 80% efficiency.

Ok, I guess I will keep the 650w then.
Would definitely want to avoid the hassle of trying to sell it and also losing too much money by selling it on online classifieds.
Appreciate the replies.and the explanations guys.
