Just finished building my pc, double checked all my connections, flipped on power switch on the back of the PSU and HELLO high pitched whining noise. This PSU is a few years old and just came out of the previous PC I built. I don't recall hearing it whine only hours ago before I removed it.
Honestly I'm afraid to hit the power button on the motherboard to attempt a boot as I'm not particularly interested in frying my new system components.
So what I did was unplug all internal cable connections from the mobo, HDD, DVD drive, and video card. I flipped the power switch on the PSU and once again heard the whine, although this time it didn't seem to be quite as bad although I can't be sure. I did notice the tone of the whine change pitch slightly up and down.
No idea where to go with this... Whether I should just plug everything back in and see if the PC powers up without catching fire or what...
Edit: I just flipped on only the PSU again and this time when I turned it off, instead of the whining noise just stopping, the frequency of the whine just went higher and higher until it was out of my range of hearing, and then it seemed to stop.
