I'm working on a system for a friend. It seems the system would shutdown...did this while XP was installed & did it during a reinstall. Pushed the power button & it ran for a second, then turned itself off again. Waited a little longer & it ran a little longer, but again turned itself off.
Temps were ok...~40c for the cpu & ~50 for the gpu. System temps were in the mid 20's.
System setup is as follows: eVGA 680SLI mainboard, Q6700 w/aftermarket cooling, 2x8800GT in SLI (eVGA's), one optical drive, one 320GB Maxtor. The old PSU was a BFG 800W. I installed a VX550. System has been running for over 12 hours non-stop while doing a reinstall & installing other software.
My question is, will the VX550 be enough to power this system? The CPU nor the GPU's will be overclocked.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks, y'all.
Them 8800's run kinda warm or what?
I'm used to my 7900GT w/Zalman cooling...these 8800's seem to run about 10c or more warmer to me.

That 800W has a lifetime warranty. Make sure you contact BFG and get it swapped out for a new one ASAP.

Who makes the BFG PSU's?
Are they (normally) decent PSU's?
I'll have to contact my friend to see if he still has the original receipt. Otherwise, according to their website, he's screwed if he didn't register.

Depends on the model, but the "old" 800W that your friend had was made by Topower. That particular unit has the same "guts" as the Tagan 800W, Mushkin 800W, etc.

They have a full breath of product, but that particular unit was reviewed fairly well, outside of too short cables and only two PCIe connectors (unless you get the "LE" model):

Not really. The registration process is only required for RECENT product (the new black box, "series" power supplies). BFG had to start keeping track of customers, purchases and warranties because the system was getting abused... besides, you have to know who's buying what in order to implement programs like trade-up, points, etc.

Since this is an old "green box" PSU, all you need to do is just call them, tell them what you have (by part number on the label of the PSU. It's probably BFGR800WPSU) and what went wrong and they'll ship you a new one, no questions asked.

That's exactly what model # it is. Have you been sneaking around my office? ;)

Well, unless it's the new ES-800 power supply that's only been on the street for about two months, that's about the only 800W part number it could possibly be. ;)

I just want to let everyone know that I received a replacement PSU in less than a week.
In addition to fast service, the also threw a T-Shirt in the box!
I think I might be doing more business with BFG with service like that!
I don't suppose they have a lifetime warranty on their motherboards in addition to their PSU's & video cards, do they? ;)
