Friend has a 3 or 4 year old system... 4 burners/3 HDDs. amd 2500+ CPU/ all in wonder 9800 pro (AGP)...enermax 300 W power supply. (epox MB)

He started getting Vdd error on boot up (health magic reported problem --Vdd fluctuated between 1.4 and 1.7 --I'm still not sure what this value measures ...MB voltage?)

computer did experience ..random reboots and had problems shutting down...problems were getting worse.

So ...replaced PSU with a SilverStone SST-ST56F Strider 560W. On 1st power on attempt ...everything whirled for a brief moment....and then nothing more happened.

Removed all the pieces..and applied power to each component ...discovered that if we left the AIW 9800 pro unattached to the power..the computer would power up and boot fine.

So we went out and got an ati x1300 pro vid card ....computer booted fine and everything is aok.

The problem i have is....

why did the AIW 9800 pro cause the system to stop functioning if its power connector was hooked up? ....on the old power supply, the card worked just seconds before the swap. On the new power supply, the card causes system to halt in less than 1/4 of a second.

??

ok...now the -5v line is reading -60!

it is all very odd.

so the Vdd refers to the chipset. I guess it has to be the motherboard.

edit: ok it was a defective chipset ...need new motherboard.

and that -60 reading goes away if use another power supply. Strange as the strider was brand new and tested good.
