I have a Dell T1700 workstation at work that needs a power supply upgrade. Easy enough I thought but the mainboard doesn't have the usual 24 pin main power connector. I did some searching and I found what looks to be a solution... a $10 adapter with active voltage regulation that converts the 24-pin connector to a 8-pin (thus making it work with the motherboard).
My problem is this approach seems a little too easy; I am skeptical about how safe it is to use something like this. Has anyone run into a similar application and how did it go? Worst case scenario I end up frying the motherboard or the PSU but reading the reviews it seems like the majority of people have found success with this solution.
Kinda sounds like it's worth a shot... but I'd hate to explain to my boss how I broke my computer. Thoughts?
I don't think Dell sells a more powerful PSU for this model, but any ATX power supply should physically fit inside the tower.
