PSU upgrade and case fans

Hi there,

Hope you are all good. I have recently purchased a pc with these specs:

CPU - AMD 6 Core FX-6300
Graphics Card - XFX Radeon 7850 2GB DD Edition
RAM - 2x4gb @1600MHz DDR3 RAM dual channel Crucial Ballistix Sport
Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar Blue SATA III 6Gb/s, 500GB, 7200rpm
Optical Drive - LiteOn 24x SATA DVD Drive
Case - CiT Knight Midi ATX Gaming Case
Power Supply -CiT 500W Gaming PSU
Mother Board - ASRock 960GM/US3S FX
Operating System - Windows 7, 64bit Pro

I want to upgrade the PSU as I don't think it's enough for this system or any future changes and the fans to keep it cooler. I am thinking of getting a FX8350 and a nvidia 770, with 2x8gb sticks and another HDD down the line when they are cheaper. I don't plan on overclocking so I just wanted to ask what PSUs would you guys recommend?

I have currently looked at the Corsair CS650M (650w). The case fans I have been looking at are 2x Arctic F12 PWM 4 Pin

Would those be enough for those future upgrades? If not any recommendations? My budget would be around £80 maximum for everything.

Thanks

The fans depend on case design and placement, but yes a couple of those could be sufficient.

That CiT PSU is junk, not capable of the rated wattage so it should definitely be replaced. If you can get the CS650M within the budget then yes it seems like a good option. Otherwise I'd look for a Seasonic or one of their relabels like XFX, rated for 600W or more.

If you are staying with one card, a unit like this should be adequate:
http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/powersupplies/451wto650w/rs500-acabm3-u1.html

If you want the ability to add another 7850, or get a more powerful card later, a unit like this should have you covered:
http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/powersupplies/451wto650w/p1-650s-nlb9.html

I looks like the back of the case will hold a 120mm. I like a fan like this:

Quiet, but will get the job done.

BTW, the google search of the case lead me to believe you are in the UK. If not, my apologies.

also as a side note, i would not get a 8350FX with your current mobo, and you don't want to OC, which is the strenght of that cpu. better go intel side with a i5 non-k around 200$
Just my 2 cents.

Like others have said, the PSU isn't enough, merely because it's not a quality piece of equipment. A good, 80+ Bronze certified coolermaster, Thermaltake, or even a few of the Rosewill PSU's will do the job. All preferably 550 ( you want overhead, never " just enough " ), maybe even a 600-650, if budget allows. There's really not a huge price difference

There is a difference between overhead and overkill. 550 watt should be plenty, if the PSU is a decent quality.

Cheers for the help guys - I ended up going for the 650 before I got to see this advice!

Yes I'm from England - no need for apologies!

I've just seen the 8350 isn't compatible with this board anyway (not entirely sure why even though it's an AM3+ board) - I may try and get an ATX board in to give some room for a graphics card or go for that i5 combo which seems like it would be perfect for gaming. This board seems to have a very snug fit for the 7850 which gives me some concern as to whether I would be able to get a bigger GPU in there. Here's what it looks like:

Btw, this case seems to be really badly designed trying to get a front fan in - wanted to ask if having 2 side intake fans (120 mm and 80mm) and 1 rear exhaust fan (120 mm) be good enough?

Cheers!

Should be, yes. For your video card, it's an either/or. The only thing nice about the front fan is carrying heat off the hard drive, but if you only have one mechanical drive, heat should not be a problem.
