PSU the loudest component in my system?

Hey guys and girls.

I have a quite freshly built computer, I got it about 2-3 months ago, all new parts.

And now I am starting to notice all the small noises and performance issues etc. I bet everyone knows how it is, you just naturally start looking for issues.

It's a Cooler Master GX Series 750W PSU, I am now wondering if this is normal, that it's is the loudest component in my system, when idle. The system runs really cool and quite quiet on idle, and even on load (if ignoring the coil whine of my video card). But that is irrelevant, really, because the PSU is located at the bottom of the PC, has intake under the computer, and exhausts out of the back of the computer.

A random detail : My system is using I'd say about 65% of the wattage on load, if not less. (Is that a problem?)

CM makes bad PSUs. It can be a hit or miss with some CM models where some are actually good. But for the GX series, I've not heard good news about them, even from real users. If you're willing to take a risk voiding warranty, you could try opening the PSU and replacing the fan with a better one. It might involve a rare 2 pin connector or soldering directly to the PCB. I don't suggest taking the risk unless you're confident about it.

Thanks for the reply. Well the noise is not too bad, well, it has some mad airflow as it gets much dust in the intake air-filter. The noise becomes noticeable when I leave the PC on for the night, I sleep almost right next to it. At least it's not too intrusive.

I have all the other case fans Cooler-Master too, since they are so quiet, yet give a nice air-flow. I am guessing I won't be able to make it better by changing the fan, and I am not really up to voiding warranty.

What about your PC, is the PSU also your loudest component in the system?

Pretty quiet except for the pump of my WC loop. Or maybe its because I have headphones on all the time.

Generally speaking, anything running right next to where you sleep is going to be loud, since the rest of the room has no sounds to make during the night (air maybe). That's why they invented sleep mode. You might want to start using it.

I haven't seen anything bad come from cooler master, personally. My last three cases were cooler master, and a couple builds have had cooler master psu's.

If the psu is too load, sell it on ebay (or right here in the forums) and get a super quiet one.
Models that are 80+ certified and equipped with a single bottom-mount fan tend to be pretty darn quiet. Cyber Monday is right around the corner.

Will uTorrent work in sleep mode? I don't think so. The internet seems to be working even when the PC is off though, I have a Gigabyte mb and usb charging works also when PC is off. What about hard-drive?

I might have a quiet PC, I really don't know. It's not really that bad, but it isn't running like a breeze. It has that low+high frequency noise that mostly all PC's (as far as I know) make.

If this noise wasn't there before then you need to RMA that PSU. IF it was like this always, then Cooler Master as the guru said is not the greatest of PSU or its a defective unit.

Grab a Thermaltake PSU they are quiete and reliable with 4 12v rails and quality parts. Mine has been working since 2007 Nov. thx

Offload 24/7 tasks to the router. Some newer routers have P2P and torrenting capabilities but they do cost a bit more. Even so, it should offset the cost of electricity needed to run your PC continuously and you wouldn't have to clean the dust from your PC so often due to less running time.

Yeah, its just how it goes. Some PSU's, they dont care about the noise as long as its cooling.

I used to own the Corsair TX 650v2 which is a great PSU, but the fan is damn loud. I sold that and went with a $30 Antec Neo Eco 620 that went on sale and this fan is literally 1/3rd the noise level of the Corsair.

It just depends.

My suggestion. Do proper research beforehand, and that probably goes for any component.

Yes doing some reviews the CM psi can be hit or miss on reliability. As far as your noise if your pc is on next to you while you sleep you may want to reconsider how close you sleep to your computer. Utorrent if not set correctly will ripen all of the time.
