PSU slowly getting fried?

Hi all!

About a year ago, I started having random reboots which I slowly traced to a faulty PSU (gave me loads of grief during that time), so I got a better one recommended by a friend. I'm not really too well versed in PSUs. My system was upgraded to use a Radeon 9600XT and a LITEON 8x DVD-RW from a GeForce4 Ti4200 128MB. Now, as in from about a week ago, the voltage sensors on the mobo have been reporting a slowly declining voltage reading on the +5V and +3.3V rails. Its now down to +4.730V and +3.120V. I presume its the PSU again which is really annoying. I'm using a Q-Tec PSU, which I doubt is really common since most of you guys tend to talk about Antec/OCZ and the like. I'm guessing I really have to fork out the cash for these higher quality PSUs if I don't want them to burn in ~ a year.

So, my question is this, which PSU would you recommend and with what wattage rating? Bear in mind that I am a student and on a budget constraint.

Thanks for your time!

Any reason why you think its the mobo? Is there any way that I can check it out to confirm?

Hmm I've never heard of Q-tec, but again it may as well be the motherboard giving you wrong wattage readings. Dunno how to confirm that sorry.

But if you do want to upgrade your PSU, you don't need to fork out that much money. You can get a ~400w quality (meaning Antec/Enermax) PSU for 50 - 70 bucks. My Enermax 470w only set me back 75.

Are you having any stability problems? If not, it's probably just your mobo sensors playing tricks on you. I'd verify the voltages with a multimeter before you shell out any money.

As for some advice:

Your system isn't very wattage heavy. You could get away with a quality 300W PSU if you don't plan to be upgrading to the latest and greatest in the near future.

Here's some reasonably priced, well-built, quality PSUs that won't fail at the drop of a hat:
