I've read through the FAQs and general information (as well as tried to use some of the less-than-stellar calculators), and it all seems fairly complicated--but I'm wondering:

What kind of PSU would be required for the following setup?:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - 2.4GHz

Tuniq T-120-LFB 120mm CPU Cooler

Abit IP35 Pro Motherboard

4x1GB Corsair XMS2 4-4-4-12 4CAS DDR2-800/PC-6400
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145034 ) x2

GIGABYTE GV-NX88T512HP GeForce 8800GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 HDCP Ready

2x Seagate Barracuda drives--not sure which model number.
1x Sony DVD-RW drive
3x case fans (one front, one rear).

I've heard estimates of about 500w. But the drain, max, on the CPU is around 100-110, video card is around 110, RAM is around 40, drives are around 40, optical drive is around 25--fans are around 6 total, this equals 331. 25 or so (bad guess?) for the motherboard itself. Around 356. Maybe 10 more for an audigy 2 sound card. So 360.

Wouldn't a 420w power source (from Alienware, no idea which actual brand) suffice? How would I know? What if I wanted to overclock the CPU to around 3.0GHz?

Thanks for any and all input.

A real qaulity 420w unit might do the trick, but if you don't know what brand it might be tricky. If your on a budget, buy a cheap antec earthwatts 500w or a corsair 450vx, for 60$ or so. That will power your rig no problem.

You need to know how much power it can supply at 12 volts. It can be a big difference between older and new designs. Brand also matters since the worst brands can only reliably deliver about half the power they claim.

420W is enough if it's distributed to the right rails. It should have around 240W, or if you OC the CPU alot, 290W on the 12V rail. You don't have to worry about the other rails. The PSU should have a sticker on it telling how the power is distributed.
