PSU required for a DFI nF4 Ultra-D?

I am running a DFI nF4 Ultra-D with Athlon 64 3000+ which will eventually be overclocked. I also have a CD-RW drive, DVD-RW drive, floppy, an 80gb HD and a 60gb HD.

I currently have an Antec True Power 550w PSU which has been more than enough for me the past 2 years but now that I just finished putting together me new comp I see that the DFI needs a 24pin ATX connector and all my antec has is a 20pin ATX connector. Is there any way to still use this PSU with my DFI board, or will I need a new one? If so, do all the new PSUs come with a standard 24pin ATX plug?

been debated over and over... look at sticky in gh forum...

i started with superflower 550's (20 pin) that had been running loaded up xp's on my d's since i had them... both ran ok for a while and then 'died'... they still work fine on a xp board but won't boot up the d...

i bought the athena 500 (24pin)with the 120 fan and all is lovely now... the athena doesn't move as much air, though, so i had to add a case fan to make up for it...

you should definately be able to run the computer fine with that PS. I ran mine (at the time it was: 3000+, CD-RW, 80gb hd, 6800gt, 1gb ram, floppy) on a 330w truepower PS. :D

Don't kwno how well you'll be able to overclock with it though ....

what is your graphics card?

My vid card is Chaintech GeForce 6600GT. If I can indeed use this PS with my setup, how do I connect it? Obviously I cant use the 20pin plug, so do I just plug in the square 4 pin and a regular IDE 4 pin plug into the mobo? or do I just use the square plug?

How do you fit a 20 pin plug in a 24 pin slot? also, that link that sea shadow posted says that you must have a 24pin PSU.

also. Once I get my new PSU with a 24pin plug. Which plugs do I need to plug into the mobo? just the 24pin right? or do I also need to plug in the square 4 pin and an IDE plug?

You would need to plug in the 24-pin and the 4 pin "square P4" 12v lead. FWIW a 20-pin psu will connect fine as long as you insert it correctly. The top 4 pins on the mainboard female ATX connector would remain uncovered.

ok I did this and have everything running. Is it bad to run the comp like this? Should I go out and get a new PSU with a full 24pin plug? What are the downsides and effects that can be caused by using a 20 pin plug in a 24 pin socket?

DFI PSU R E Q U I R E M E N T

Partial quote:
you are on your own when using a 20-pin power supply.

DFI no longer will support customers who do not adhere to the minimum power supply requirements.

if the board has a 24-pin power connector, then you must have a true 24-pin power supply.

not a 20-to-24 pin adapter

DFI requires at least a 480w power supply??

considering I only have a 420w Enermax I don't see that working...oh well there goes that board.

Don't make my mistake, I ran a PSU hungry case, with tons of case mods - and what happened to me, my precious mobo got so messed up, it finally died. When I tried calling Abit, they never friggin' pick up their mofo phone, WT-h is that? And I was 3 weeks away from the warranty. You can't even find their trash on the website for RMA. I was ticked.

well I guess either I sell this power supply and get something more robust or settle for something less...

Heck the video card only requires a 350 or better power supply and it isn't like I am running a raid setup or what not...oh well..

you have 4 power connectors and you should use them all- the 24 pin, the 4 pin atx, a 4 pin lolex (above the chipset fan) and a floppy connector (between the top 16x pci-e slot and the cpu) its in the manual.

also, 480 may be just to cover their ass but i wouldn't mess with a 20 pin myself as all nf4 boards at least recommend the 24 pin native.

people run on less than 480 but if you're getting a new psu anyway, why not get one that meets the "requirements" if you don't want the full 480 then be sure you have at least 26a on the 12v rail. dfi says 24a, nv says 26a, i'd say just get something that will carry you through an upgrade or 2.

When they say you need a 480W PSU, they mean that you need a 480W PoS PSU. Any PSU by a decent brand (Antec, Seasonic, Fortron, Enermax) should be fine at around 450W.

Yeah but the video card vendor ain't gonna say that it will perform full at 350, minimum is 350, like a minimum for a game is 1 GHz, we all know a 2 GHz will handle the game @ optimum speeds, that's what they mean

I have all 4 power plugs in the mobo and I have the nforce drivers installed. I do not yet have the latest bios, I will get that from DFI tomorrow. I believe I have fixed the blue screen problem. I think it was my slave hard drive going bad.
