Hi,
I haven't built a system in 10 years and just need some advice on psu selection. I'm building the following:
i5
AMD 6950 (starting with 1 but may do 2 with CF later)
1 ssd
1 mechanical hd
optical drive
etc.
Will most likely build in a Corsair case.

At Corsair's power supply finder, it recommends units into 950 and 1000 W. Not sure this is right since I'm not going to run the high end of the 69xx series.

Also, are all new psu units these days modular or do I need to distinguish?

thx.

The OuterVision eXtreme PSU Calculator is pretty accurate and is definitely up-to-date, so go get some preliminary numbers from that one. You can double check by posting them in this thread for more analysis.

They're not all modular, check for that in the manufacturer's specs or here.

a single 6950 doesn't need any better than a good 500 watt (really a good 400 watt but those cost as much or more anyway).

crossfire would need a good 650, 750 to be really safe (draws 509 watts from the wall in furmark per the front page's measurements, so a great 500 watt supply would work).

your odds of actually moving to crossfire are probably fairly low. by the time you really want to do it you might as well get a new card.
