PSU questions...

Edited now with pics of my new FSP Group Epsilon FX700-GLN 700W PSU 🙂

OMG teh huge box!
Side view of teh blue.
Yeah, so very blue.
120mm goodness 🙂

Fortunately, my TT Armor case has a HDD cage in front of the PSU, so i'll never see it.
For those with non-blue cases , this PSU's color might be cause for concern 😛

I won't get around to installing this till this weekend likely, but i wanted to post these before anyway.

I'm posting this here, since i know the Power Supply thread is supposed to remain free of brand-based questions.

I'm looking for a very good PSU, something that can handle a dual GPU setup (Crossfire/SLI), & at least 6 HDDs & 2 opticals, a sound card, & several case fans, & with ease, not just barely.

My current OCZ Modstream 520W doesn't even pass the S&M PSU portion of the test, which is disheatening to say the least, considering i only have a single X1800XT.

The one that i think looks best for me right now is the Fortron FX700-GLN 700W

It's priced well in Canada ($205 CND 🙂), & certainly seems like it would have adequate power.

The concern i have is the quad rail 12V layout.
I understand the importance of a solid 12V total, but i'm confused on how the 12V is distributed on this PSU.

It's marked as 15A on each rail, but in this XBit review, , they mention that the second & fourth rails are for the first & second video cards...

Wouldn't 15A per card be far too low?

A simple explanation would help me out here greatly 😕

Also, if anyone has any other specific recommendations, bring 'em on.
But it'd be nice if the recommendations are available in Canada.
NCIX & MemoryExpress are good spots for me.

15A per card is more than enough. That PSU will work very nicely. More than likely the 2nd and 4th 12v rails are attached to the 2 PCIe power connectors, so you don't have to worry about the distribution.

I was reading a bit on another forum, & it appears that one of the 12V rails will be going to waste, unless, i'm running a dual processor system.

Bah!

And how do you consider 15A for one card adequate 😕

ATi suggests a 30A + 12V total for the X1900s...

I thought maybe that Fortron utilized more than just one of the quads per card, but i don't believe it does now.

Argh...i need some other suggestions guys.

That PSU should be good for years to come.
Just hide the rail until your ready to upgrade...
Nice PSU btw.
Also understand others will say you don`t need that much power....
But as far as I am concerned get what you want!
You could always look at the other Fortron PSU`s.

Ah i just realized i'm an idiot.

The 30A recommendation ATi has is for a single rail 12V configuration, or the total for the 12V.

Assuming the Fortron's 2nd & 4th rail being dedicated for a PCI-e card each, it should indeed be overkill, which excellent 🙂

/i'm moron tonight...must get to sleep 😛

Hmm, no one has any other suggestions...

Here's another one i found: Silverstone ST60F 600W

This also has quad rails, but this time, the 12V config isn't 15A for each like the Fortron.

It's:
12V1 - 13A (peak 18A)
12V2 - 18A
12V3 - 16A
12V4 - 8A (peak 13A)

Does anyone know which rails would be for the PCI-e connectors, CPU, etc?

Personally, I'd go for the Silverstone unit. The fortron unit has a couple of capable rails for dedicated card use, but what are you going to run other +12 volt needs off of if you ever get two cards? And this assumes the Fortron will in a couple of years still be able to put out that much power, which like all power supplies, its output will degrade over time.

The Fortron Epsilon series can be loaded on the 12V rails any which way as long as the pesky 240VA limit isn't passed (stupid Intel).
The FX700-GLN has four +12V lines with a current of 15A each, and the only limitation to their combined load is the overall wattage of the unit, i.e. 680W for the main rails. In other words, the manufacturer promises you can load this power supply through one 12V power rail only.
At least that's what they claim. So don't worry about all this naysaying and enjoy the fine PSU. Tell us how quiet it is, too. 🙂

EDIT: Don't worry about the current distribution. The most power-hungry card available right now is the X1900XTX and it requires about 10A, give or take an amp or so.

I actually ordered the Fortron a few hours ago 🙂

When i get it, I'll update this thread or start a new one with pics, etc. if you guys want 🙂

You could have got its little brother, the FX600. It's being sold for around $102. +sh per Froogle. Plus Enhance is selling a 600 W I've found for $97 (about the same as the Silverstone ST60 except it also has modular. Silly to spend nearly $200. for a PSU...

I Agree with the above statement.

How is it that you guys have been here for 4 years + & you still can't read 😉?

I'm in Canada.

Even if i did find a US store that will ship to Canada (like Tankguys, e.g.), i'd get dinged for extra border fees & maybe even additional shipping fees.

That's why i don't even bother to try to order from the US.

Good to hear 🙂

I also love how it's about an inch shorter than my current Modstream, which will make for a much easier time squeezing it into cases.
