My brother is looking into buying a video card for his new system, so i suggested a 7600GT. Problem is, I'm not sure if his PSU can handle it. The PSU is a Fortron, so it's a good make, but it's only 300W, and eVGA's website reccomends a PSU of 350W or greater. He's not interested in spending anymore money on a PSU, the 7600GT is stretching his budget as is, so I just wondering if it would be safe to put the 7600GT in this system. Specs are as follows.

Athlon X2 3800+ (Socket AM2)
2x512 MB sticks of DDR2
300GB SATA HDD
1 DVD-RW drive

He wants a 7600GT >
eVGA says it needs a 350W >
He only has a 300W and doesn't want to spend a dime more on his rig >
Tell him it's time to run with the big dogs... Get the 7600GT and a good 400-500W PS

Hello. If the specs call for a minimum of a 350W PSU, then I would go ahead and make sure that I had at least a 400W PSU. If you want to upgrade, then sometimes that means more than one part.

As long as the Forton as good amount of 12v current (12-14A+) it will have no problems at all.

The truth of the matter is a good 300 watt PSU will run 95% of the single CPU non SLI/Crossfire systems out there, read HERE.

This is true....But it must be GOOD. A 300W Zippy will hold a stable 12V@22A@40C.
But most of the good 300W units are not quiet.
Minerva's young brother blew-up a 350 watter with three days of gaming ;) No other hardware was injured.
Many Dell 300~350W PSUs are provided by Delta or Lite-On and are GOOD units.

OP, be ready to buy a decent 400W unit. eWiz.com has a 360W Enhance you might consider looking at for < $30.

Note: Over looking the power requiorments of a rig is trouble waitiung to happen. Saving a few buck$ on power
inorder to buy a tiny bit better graphics card IS false economy. :D
