I have a Shuttle. SN85G4v1 to be exact... and now the power supply wont work. Every time i boot the computer... it lights up, but never really begins to power up - it just dies. It COULD be the fan - the psu doesnt work when the fan isnt spinning... although i doubt that is the problem.

Does anyone have any advice?

More importantly:

Also, if i get a new motherboard and PSU - and plug my existing hard drive into it with all other parts as before - WILL I LOSE MY DATA?

Is this the general consensus and fact - new motherboard will NOT cause data loss?

Also, in regards to my PSU problems... any other takers?

No, of course not. Why would changing your hardware change the data on your hard drive?

It's either a bad PSU or a bad motherboard. Pick one and replace it and see if the problem goes away.

Is this a "used to be working system" that suddenly decided not to boot? Or is it a newly put together system? Did you open the system or tinker with it lately before the problem occurred? If it used to be working, then the problem could be dirt build up or the PSU is dying. If it's a new system then you might want to check all your wiring connection. If you lately tinker with it, check wirings again and make sure nothing is shorting to ground. The least you can do before buying a new PSU or mobo is to dismount the mobo from the case and place it on top of a cardboard or box and just connect the HDD, a CD Drive (ram, Graphics card installed but not add in cards) and try again If the system boots you have wiring problem or a short to ground. Remember, the 12 volt connector on the mobo (if your has one) has to be connected before the mobo boots.
