psu problems?

Having a problem lately. Computer would lock up or the screen would go blank and the msg would come on where it says "your monitor is working properly" or somethng like that. The fans would still be going but I'd have to reboot.

I figured it was psu. 5v reading on Asus probe was always just barely in spec. Like 4.78v

Ordered new Corsair 450VX psu. Just installed it. Asus probe shows 4.703v. 3.3v reading is 3.232. 12v is 12.352v. Vcore fluctuates between 1.648 and 1.664.

However, I've been on the computer for about 10 minutes so far and it wouldn't have lasted that long yesterday.

Also, the new psu didn?t have a little 3 pin molex. My old one had it and I plugged into the mobo where it says pwr fan1. Now on Asus probe it says power fan in not hooked up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Never rely on software voltage readings. If you want to test the voltage rails please use a DMM. At least you have a fancy psu now with plenty of juice for your system.

OK, I brought a dvm home from work. I couldn't have anything plugged into the back of the computer and still get at it. I had it on the table with the side cover off and fired it up. So no monitors, speakers, internet, mouse, keyboard. I pulled the 4 pin molex from the back of the dvd-rw and checked the 5v pin and got 4.936v and I checked the 12v pin and got 12.54v.

Therefore, I'm encouraged. The Asus probe still reads 4.703v. Also, did I mention already that I was on the computer for about an hour last nite without any shutdowns or reboots.

I forgot to look for bulging caps or discolored pins on the mobo 20 pin socket. If I have any further problems, that'll be the first thing I check.

You think I'm OK now?

I'm surprised that the 12V rail is that close to exceeding ATX spec (12.6V) since Corsair is typically <3%. Is it possible for you to disconnect the psu from everything except a case fan, use a paper clip to jumper the green wire to one of the black ones, then test the 12V (yellow) lead with your DMM?
