PSU or something else?

Hey guys,

I just built me a new system and it will not start at all. It won't even attempt to do anything. No fans spinning, no sounds, nothing. It's as if the computer is unplugged. I do see the green light on the mobo turned on though when the PSU is plugged in...

I know everything is plugged in properly and everything is seated properly. All mobo power connecters are where they belong. PSU is connected to a good outlet and the I/O switch is on. I also know that this PSU is enough to power this system.

I built this last night and when I tried turning it on, nothing happened. I know nothing is shorting out the mobo. It is screwed onto the case just fine and nothing is touching something important and shorting it. The power button cable is plugged in where it's supposed to go according to the intel manual. I'm just wondering if the power button is broken.

I've tried shorting the pins with a screwdriver, knife, and other metals and nothing. Still just sits there.

Any ideas on what it can be? This isn't my first build so I have an idea of what I'm doing.

Can a dead mobo battery completely stop a system from even attempting to boot?

1) great photos 🙂

2) confirm that your IDE cable isn't hooked up backwards or keyed backwards (easily tested by just unplugging it and trying to power up)

3) as much of a chore as it might be, consider removing the motherboard from the case, laying it on cardboard, threatening it a bit, and then test it on cardboard with just the absoulte essential items.
 
I give it only about 1% chance that the PSU is the culprit.

Might be a dead RAM-stick. Try booting with only one.
Also, make completely absolutely 100% sure certain the RAM is correctly seated. Then do it again.
 
I just got home and haven't had time to do anything..........but.......

Should I even have that 4 pin molex power cord connected to the mobo? That's the auxiliary power incase you're using a 3d card that draws more than 75 watts. The manual states to USE it if the card draws that much power. It does not say NOT to use it if I have the card powered by a PCI-E power connector. In fact, it says to use it or "damage might occur."

I guess I should pull the card and try without it? Do you think that might be the problem?
 
I just tried another power supply and nothing. I've removed the 3D card and tried the ram sticks seperately.

Nothing budges at all. Mobo still has the green light lit up but nothing happens when I press the power button.

I'm guessing I have a dead mobo?
 

Yeah, best photo's I've ever seen around here.

Might check the CMOS jumper make sure it's in the right position.

Unhook everything but the essentials (CPU + HS&F, ram gfx card and PSU).

If still no go, pull the mobo and test on a phone book (as Mech said above).

(your slowly pulling it apart, as if your gonna replace some HW).

I recommend ALWAYS bench testing the mobo with the essentials b4 putting in the case. It's a PITA to put in, take out, put back in etc. Just cuz stuff is new don't mean it works 😉

Thanks for the comments. Camera is a Canon 30D + 420ex flash +Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 lens. I do photography for a living but these were just quick snapshots. 🙂

My PSU is a 24 pin and so is the mobo. I have made sure that the CMOS jumper is in the right position. I have also tried booting with just the essentials and still no go.

I will remove it from the case now and try it on some cardboard.
 
I just tried it on some phone books. Nothing works. No combination of anything works.

I think this mobo is dead. I will RMA it right now....
