PSU or mobo bad?

Or something else? Came home today, pressed the power button and saw the windows screen but then it all went black. No power anywhere but the LED and my CPU fan were still spinning but very weakly.

Unplugged the power cable and tried pressing the power button to drain and got a little more life for a second then it all went away again.

Tried the clear cmos button and the power/reset buttons on my mobo but no go.
Left the power off for tonight to try in the morning but any one experience this before?

Hoping it's not the mobo cause then I'll have to get a new CPU

Hmm. Well, probably time to start swapping parts. I would try a new known-good PSU, first. Chances are, the PSU went. (How old, what brand / wattage, what kind of load on it (CPU, GPU, overclocked or not), and how dusty?)

All in my signature. Most of it just passed the 6 year mark. CPU was oced. Opened it up and dust wasn't bad. Just replaced my case a few months ago and cleaned it all out at the time.

Glad you got it sorted. 5-6 years is a pretty decent run for a PSU, especially with an OCed CPU, and especially if it doesn't have all Japanese high-end capacitors. (Those are the ones that have 7- and 10-year warranties on them.)

Edit: Hmm, 650HX... I think that those do have Japanese caps? Maybe someone with more in-depth knowledge of those PSUs can comment. What's the warranty on that? If it was 7 years, and not 5 years, maybe you could get a refurb unit out of them? Whether you would actually want to, would be another question.

Just took it out and it's the 620HX, which only had 5 years of warranty. Just my luck lol.

I also think I figured out the reason why my PSU died. My computer was sitting on carpet and with Fractal Design R5, the feet are not tall enough to put it above the carpet versus my old Raven RV02 which was tall as hell with the feet. This case pulls air to the PSU through the bottom. I noticed this after I pulled out the dust filter from the bottom and there was no dust at all. Considering the PSU survived 6 months like that is kinda crazy. Sigh lesson learned. I put two boxes as a stand for the case now.

Yeah, lack of airflow could kill a PSU.

I killed an old cheap ATX PSU that I had on a Pentium III rig once. The fan had died, so I replaced the fan, but rather than re-solder the connections, I simply ran the molex for the fan outside the PSU with the rest of the wires.

One time I was working on the PC, and had disconnected everything from the PSU, and then I plugged things back in, and forgot the plug the fan back in.

Well, the PSU went boom, one of the big caps overheated and started leaking, it was kind of a mess. Luckily, the PC was unharmed, but I learned my lesson.

I just got to where you stated your specs (in sig) and saw the Corsair HX. That was my first thought. I've had three bad ones cross my path so far. One guy brought in his pc and while it had enough power (somehow) to boot his Q6600 into Windows, it ran like a drunk after a short time. I tested his system and noticed that the power supply got real hot real fast. i checked the fan and while it was spinning, there was no force behind it. You could blow on it and send it spinning in the other direction...lol! I checked the voltages and they were way off spec (I remember the 12V line was at 10.7). It was out of warranty so I popped a new ps in for him and sent him on his way.

IMO the HX line was garbage which is odd for a Corsair product.

ETA: I did pull it apart and replace the fan but no good, the unit was shot.
