PSU or Bios problems?

Hey,
I recently finished my build of a new gaming rig, after some problems with the hard drives everything seemed to be running fine except the USB ports (devices wouldn' power up and were not recognized by bios or winXP). I called asus and they said to update the chipset drivers, then the bios. I updated the chipset drivers no problem, and downloaded the Bios file from asus and flashed from XP using their program. Everything seemed to go fine intially, so i entered the bios and changed the ram timings from auto to what they had been before the flash, and rebooted. A screen came up with a 'CMOS CHECKSUM ERORR', so I put in my asus driver CD to re-flash the bios. The flashing process came up with an error (something like 'check your cmos jumpers') so I reset the jumpers. The computer then failed to power up at all. After calling asus again, they suggested a bad PSU. This seems to be correct, as standby LED on the mo'bo isn't lighting up, and the fan on the PSU isn't turning. I checked the PSU with a watt-counter, with negligable readings (and submitted an RMA to zipzoom). I just want to be sure that this kind of problem could be caused by the PSU, and not the funkiness of my bios. Sorry for the long post, and thanks for your help.

You got a CMOS checksum error there. _Not_ a BIOS checksum error.

This just means you need to redo your BIOS settings - which is kind of obvious after a BIOS update. Enter Setup as prompted, load optimal defaults for a start, make your other misc choices, save and exit.

Ah, I see, so it actually /did/ screw up on the second reflash. That'll hardly be a PSU problem, sounds more like you need a genuine BIOS flash recovery. Find out what BIOS brand the board uses (AMI, Phoenix, Award, etc.) and then google for the appropriate recovery procedure.

I think the PSU is legitimately dead, although i may have problems when I next power up. Both Asus And Antec seem to agree that their is a problem with the PSU (fans don't move, wattcounter doen't scome up with much). I just want to make sure i'll be able to re-flash the bios (without spending 40 for a repair kit) when i can actually start the comp back up.
