While sitting here playing F.E.A.R on my PC I notice a burning smell. Look at the back of the PC and the PSU is puffing out very light white smoke! I go to unplug the PSU before it totally screws up my PC or bursts into flame my PC turns itself off. GOD DAMN! so I take the old PSU out in hopes it didn't mess up everything and plug in the only avil. PSU I have which is a Roswell 300W Value Series and nothing! doesn't boot up or even spin the fans.

Am I totally screwed? Do you think it might just be the motherboard? The memory works fine in the PC I'm using at the moment. Any advice will help.

Thanks.

I'd get a reliable PSU probably like the Corsair HX series and try that first. You're going to need it anyway when you piece your system back together anyway right?

true thanks.

How is a Thermaltake TruePower II 430W? It's only $38 at CompUSA and I have one down the street.

probably be decent but it won't be up to the quality of the Corsair. If you need something immediately that or maybe look for a Antec Earthwatts or similar PSU.

How can you be certain the source of the smoke was the PS? A second PS doesn't work and you're condeming the first?

You've got other problems. Your guess of motherboard sounds as good as any.

If I understand your post correctly, your memory is fine. Can you check the processor? Narrow it down.

Narrowed it down to the PSU cause I opened the PSU up and all but 1 cap was fried and also the board was pretty black on the underside so I doubt it was the motherboard. The PSU also smelled of burning crap but the motherboard was pulled and seemed fine. I guess this is what I get for buying a 580W PSU for $20 :p

I do have another motherboard and will try your advice but I'm gonna have to buy another PSU regardless cause the 300w wont be good enough for a new build.

Oh, well you made no mention of all that. :D I'd like to see a pic too.
