PSU not powering up?

spanky

hello all,

i am having a big time strange problem. before i contimue, here is my hardware:

- fic 503+
- 64mb pc100
- 2mb trident vc
- k6-2 300
- 250w atx
- 300w atx
- 10gb wd hd
- 8gb wd hd

if i power on my system with the hd connected to the psu, the psu seems like its dead (the psu fan doesn't even spin). so i disconnect the hd from the psu and power up the system and it post normally. i try another psu (230w) and i have the same problem. with the hd connected to the psu, the psu seems dead. soon as i pull the hd tho, the thing fires back up normally. i tried a different hd as well (8gb wd), with same results. does anyone know what's going on here? i'm totally baffled. please help!

usually, that implies there's a short somewhere in the system. what i would do is unplug EVERYTHING connected to the psu, then slowly add them one by one, ending with the hard drive. this will prove that it's your hard drive that's shorting out. at that point, i'll have to think of something else for you to do!

don't get me wrong though, sometimes re-wiring all your stuff up fixes the problem..or you could try a different power connector

hi,

right now, the atx psu isn't even connected to the mobo. i'm using the paper clip tactic to power up the psu without the mobo. so as of right now, the only thing connected to the psu is the hd. i've actaully tried 3 different hd's (all wd...i dunno if that means anything). here's a funny twist. i plugged one of the hd's into another case with an at psu and tried to power the thing up. same result...system seems dead. soon as i pull the hd, it fires up. BUT....now...when i power the at system up with its normal hd...it seems dead too! when i pull the power to the hd....system posts. if i didn't know any better...i would say my hd has some electronic STD! u won't believe how frustrating this is...ARGH!

suggestions?

that is indeed weird. i've seen stuff like this before, though.

of course, it never turned out to be the hard drive. it was usually the floppy drive, which the user replaced and that made the problem go away.

i'm thinking here though...let you know if i come up with anything

the psu is not connected to the mobo tho, so i am quite sure the floppy is not causing any problems.

well, maybe it IS time to hook the psu back up and re-do the wiring to the mobo , floppy , etc. that's what i would do next...you're obviously not getting very far with the PSU outside of the case

true....very true...

i just hate it when i get everything outside the case working...than put it in and find out i F'ed something up and need to take it back out. but seems either way i am bound to screw up. why god why? 🙁

thanks for your suggestions tho sohcrates 🙂
