PSU modding?

I see plenty of hot swap PSU's on ebay from compaq / ibm servers that are 500w+ rated
these are old skool and should be reliable no?
only problem being the connector is not std ATX
so would it be possible to hack one open and then change over the wires with an existing psu?
Dangerous? I can work a soldering iron but am no edward scissorhands 😛

Not only are they not std ATX or BTW connectors but they're also not standard sizes any of the PSU's you've described likely won't fit your case or at least not the current bracket/mounting holes.

The size /brackets I'm not worried about
Someone had a great sig that said "there's nothing that a big enough hammer wont fix" 🙂
The wires / connector though cannot be fixed by any hammer I know of -- looking to be a little original with me mods but don't want to end up dead 🙁
