My new Core 2 Duo build is just over a month old. I've been absolutely thrilled with its performance up to this point. Last night I heard a loud rattling sound constantly coming from the PC. I opened it up and listened carefully and it sounds like it's coming from the PSU...more specifically, the PSU's fan. It sounds like the fan is running into a big metal piece that's causing it to make the most annoying sound. I tapped the side of it firmly and it went away...for a while. A few hours later the sound started again. It sounds like something is wrong with the PSU's fan. It's making some kind of awful vibration that amplifies the sound the more closely pressed the PSU is to the metal of the case.
My PSU is an Enhance 500W 80%+ efficiency PSU, which I understood to be a relatively high quality/efficient unit. After spending hours plugging stuff in and carefully organizing the wire paths in my case, I would really hate to have to change PSU's, but I also can't live with this sound -- I shut it off last night because I could hear the clanking from a room away.
Anyone had an issue like this with their PSU. I know that messing with the PSU is a big no-no, but would it be safe to take a vacuum to it and see if that changes something? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
