Hum. So I decided to run a stress test on the Radeon 5870. As soon as the test starts, a weird crackling noise comes out of the PSU. Eventually the whole computer shuts off in mid test. I took video/audio of the crackling. What do you think of the noise in the video? This is a brand new computer build.

EDIT: This is a modular PSU. I took it out of the case and reconnected all the pieces. I think of the cables was not connected great. Now the computer does NOT turn off, but I still get the odd crackling sound.

Below are the specs on the system I built.
====================================

Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P Bios revision f7 (latest version)
AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE at 200x17 and 1.425 voltage (all default)
Cooler Master V8
OCZ OCZ3BE1600C8LV4GK Black Edition DDr3 1600 2x2gb at 8-8-8-24 voltage 1.65 (factory settings. Had to manually set in bios)
Cooler Master HAF 932
Ultra X3 850 Watt psu
Windows 7 64 Bit RC
3 x 750 gb Samsung SATA HD

Might be time to get a better power supply. Corsair, BFG, Enermax, Antec etc.

Really? Really Really? Then let me Google that for you.

The Ultra X3's are a far cry from what the Ultra line of modular PSU's used to be, and many people are fools to overlook them.

Ultra has went as far as to make the 1600. What other company for consumer PSU's makes that? http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews/Ultra_X3_1600W/

OP, are your speakers off during the test? There's many cases of bad video cards feeding static into the sound. You could be hearing that.

I really don't think there is anything the OP can do other than replace the PSU. Send it back in under warranty and maybe you'll get a better one. The sound does not seem to be coil whine which happens on some PSU's.

OCCT seems to bring out the worst in various hardware, the HD 4870 and 4890 being some examples. PSU's are known to shutoff/blow/fizzle/fry using OCCT especially if they are underrated. The X3 might be ok, but hey look the OP's happens to sizzle under OCCT so buyer beware.

Is it really a *crackle*? That's a very specific term, and the only reason a computer would truly crackle is with a short. Turn off all your lights and LED fans and look in the psu with it running, do you see anything like that?

If its more of a hiss or buzz, it's maybe a cap or choke of some sort, somewhat common under heavy load (although often an indicaton that the component needs replaced)

It doesn't sound normal to me. I watched your vid and there's definitely a noise there that can be described as a crackle, almost like dropping beads on a table but more muffled.

Don't run OCCT PSU test on that PSU until you get it replaced!

That sound is familiar. I usually run when I hear it. (although with 20kW power supplies it's a lot louder like power line pylons in the fog. )

Last time I stressed my system under OCCT, my motherboard died. For god sake, leave OCCT and just use your computer. That program is made for killing PCs. :)
