PSU: Limiting my OC?

"The rest of your system outclasses the power supply, I'd put $$ towards that before any further attempts at using MORE power (assuming you want higher o'c)."

"..it may be a matter of parts with potential of drawing enough amps that power supply can't cope so well anymore, rails rapidly fluctuate as inductors field collapses and caps empty/recharge. Even so, if the system is working stabily as-is it might be better to just put all the funds towards the NEXT upgrade, or build a new box from scratch.

I can't guesstimate that the PSU is directly limiting overclock, but it is out of place and a liability based on value of other parts, even moreso the more power drawn. INsufficient power can have seemingly unrelated effects like ripple wearing out the mobo's power circuit caps, or it's own and as a result, other parts like HDD."

thanks for the advice mindless1.

I was told that my PSU is not that great so I just wanted more advice on what PSU I should get or is it not a big deal. Thanks.

The PSU that I have is Aspire 500W.

For $85 I'd get Enermax 470 since it has dual 12v rails at 16 and 15A for a total of 31!!!

At $100 the Antec 550 is really good I suppose.

At near $140, i'd get OCZ 520 PowerStream as it is fully loaded.

But....considering you are already at 2.5ghz..chances are you wont go much past 2.6-2.7 on air cooling. So I wouldnt spend too much money since even if there will be a performance improvement, it will be minimal. Thus either spend less now, or more today (then get a power supply that supports BTX, 24-pin, 6pci-express plug, etc. - like OCZ 520)

If you play videogames a lot, you'll get more performance improvement from unloading your cpu by getting an Audigy 2 ZS soundcard or something along those lines, than upgrading by extra 100mhz. Onboard sound can eat up a lot of cpu cycles, especially that Realtek AC'97 stuff....

Also since your PSU has 34A on the 12 V rail, you should download Motherboard Monitor 5 and check for voltage fluctuations on 3.3 and 12 v rails. If they are close like 3.27 and 11.90, then upgrading your power supply probably wont change things.

I didn't realize Antec was able to suck, since it's a company...They don't suck, and 90% of this board will agree.

I think the Fortron is the best you can get, shy of OCZ and PC Power & Cooling. The 550W Fortron you linked to is a server model, so you would need a 24pin/20pin adapter for the mb header. Sometimes they will fit without an adapter, you can let the extra four pins hang off the side of the plug on the mb.
I have the 530W Fortron, which is a regular ATX desktop model, and am very satisfied with it. My 350W Fortron even powered my rig with no problems.
I wouldn't take the manufacturer's specs for the rails too seriously when choosing a psu. Your Aspire psu is a good example of a psu with a great 12V rating that doesn't really perform. Just get a good brand that other overclockers recommend. For example, my 350W Fortron is only rated at 16A for the 12V rail, but will outperform most 400W-500W psus.
