PSU Killing my computer?

I have been having a lot of problems with my computer, and I am trying to eliminate all of the possible sources for the short-outs I have been having. 3 times my motherboard has shorted out, and twice my psu went with it. The third time the psu didn't break though. I have thought it was our electricity, in which we had monitors installed on our outlets and junctions, and everything looked ok, I also bought a 540 Watt Battery Backup. My ISP is certain that the surges aren't getting moved through their lines, and so I have now started thinking about an internal problem. I talked to a guy who said that most PSUs are crap, and that the psu is most likely causing the short-outs. I have a Demon Silver Chrome 480 Watt psu. This guy reccomended that I import a psu from japan.
Could my psu brand, which all three times were the same type of PSU, be causing the short outs?

That would be the last advice I took from that guy. I mean import a power supply? There are just as many good models to get here as there are bad ones.

Looks like the problem could very well be your power supply. That thing sells for $29.00, which for a 480w power supply, is not very much.

I'll be damned. You know what my computer repair shop charged me for that psu? $60. Never going there again. SHit. Guess I'll go in and take out that psu tommarrow. Newegg, here I come.

What else is in the system by the way? I guess I shouldn't recommend a powersupply before hearing what's in the system, but I assume it's nothing insane.

Gigabyte Triton for the 64 bit processor
Athlon 64 3000+
Geforce 6800 GT
1 Gig Ram, nothing special
M-audio Revolution 7.1 sound card.
SOny DVD-rom, nothing special

I dont know anything about psus other than their watts and my requirements, so good brands are lost on me. I have to totally trust you guys on them. Cool Master is a good one my friend says, and he has never heard of xclio. Are the Xclios the best I can get for a 450 watter? for around $50?

The XClio is a great deal. It's made by channelwell, the same company that makes Antecs.

The top manufacurers for PSUs are (sorry if I leave out some)

PC P&C, Seasonic, OCZ, Antec, Fortron, Enermax, Sparkle,... uhhhh... those are the ones I can think of right now.

A 400watt+ PSU from any of those companies would be able to handle your system just fine. Don't trust wattages on generic PSUs. As you've seen, they can be a bit shady ;)
