I'm wandering across multiple sub-forums here trying to reduce my PC's noisiness.
The noise level is _really_ starting to get on my nerves, to the extent that I find myself using a much older PC just for the peace and quiet.
I've put in a fan controller for the 3 case fans (but only 1 connected yet as right cables haven't arrived yet). But turning down the one case fan doesn't help a lot. Can't face changing the cpu cooler, but now I'm thinking major culprit is the psu. Its 550W 2x8cm fans.
Thing is I don't remember finding the machine as noisy when it was newly built (18 months ago), but don't know if its actually gotten noisier or if I've gotten less tolerant.
If the psu fans are really getting noisier that's probably not a good sign, no?
Anyway, if it has any automatic thermal control it does it itself, not via motherboard. So I guess that could have failed, for starters. But maybe it has no auto control, because there is a manual control knob on the back. Its set to full. Its even possible it wasn't previously set to full and got turned up by accident.
But how am I supposed to know if its OK to turn this knob down? The PC itself is decently cool, but I have no temp monitor inside the psu, so couldn't turning it down potentially mess up the psu? But if so, why is the knob even there? Surely it's just an accident waiting to happen for a technologically clueless fellow like myself?
Perhaps I should just replace the psu entirely, get one with a 12" fan, but money is a bit of an issue! And this psu does at least work reliably with the vid card etc.
