PSU for my Server

Hi folks,

please help me pick a PSU for my server :

E7400 (TDP 65W)
5x HDD
Ceton Tuner

Short-term upgrade planed to Q6600 (TDP 95-105W)
Medium-term, platform change to Pentium G2020 or similar with max 65W

I am a fan of Seasonic, so def prefer something from their line-up. i was thinking this one : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151117

Other ideas?

Looks like a solid unit, can't go wrong with a Seasonic. I think its best to go with the medium term upgrade plan and a UPS. Unless, you don't mind having it abruptly shutting down or power outage never happens in your house.

UPS, T'd like to and there a few old ones in the office I can get my hands on for cheap, but TBH I don't have the space for one in my tiny Manhattan apt. Power outages are not an issue here unless there is a hurricane - ha!

Honestly, something like a Corsair CX500 would be just fine.

Yeah, if there's no graphics card and the CPU is low wattage then a big PSU isn't really necessary unless you have a lot of drives. I have a 6 HDD setup with a 95W CPU and onboard graphics. I've never seen it draw more than 125W according to the meter from my UPS and that includes the Modem and Router.

That might be pushing it a bit. Normally the figure used is 10W per normal mechanical drive but obviously it depends green or whatnot imo.

Only reason I went with a 750W PSU for my 15x HDD fileserver is that I was too cheap to get a controller that supported staggered spin-up

I feel a 500W is too much for my small system. I'm really looking at a max power draw of some 150W, maybe 175 if I put in that Q6600.

I picked the above SeaSonic because it is close enough (350W) and is Gold certified. I am thinking of saving $20 now though and go for the 300W Bronze :

12 HDDs in my system get by with a 430W Seasonic, without staggered spinup.

300W should be plenty, bag those 20$s, unless there's a much better warranty on the 350W unit. Technically you can probably get by on less than 150W, but they don't make those in ATX spec...

Well, to be fair, my drives were power hungry 7200rpm suckers (back when they were 200GB each), plus it also powers an OCed 65nm C2Q and (at one time) 4890
